If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

When attempting to clone XTL2500 radios, the radio powers off when back on, losing connection with cable/laptop. Anyone ever experience this? Doing it on multiple XTL’s.

Is that because you see the controlhead display go dark after you see the "Write Complete" displayed on the computer screen and the controlhead lights back up again a second or two afterwards? That is normal and both the radio and controlhead are resetting/rebooting.

It never completes the write. In cloning mode, I read the sn, then mdc id. Then when I hit program radio, it starts but the radio powers down - then i get a message that says something to the effect unable to detect radio. Radio will then power back on without taking the write.

Are you trying to use a codeplug file from another radio with a different serial number? If so, just read the number and forget about the MDC part and just program the radio after you read the number. If it writes to the radio change your MDC parameters/settings later.

Can you just simply read the codeplug file that is currently in the radio without any errors popping up?

If you are using a USB cable, you need to adjust the "timers" up in the settings menu for CPS. The timing on what CPS expects to read the radio is too quick. The radio goes into program mode to read the SN and flashcode, then resets before it writes the radio. It's not turning back on fast enough for CPS before the timer runs out.

If it is set for less than 3 seconds, that could be problem. Adjust it up to 3 seconds and try that, but definitely skip the MDC part for now, just read the serial number and program for now.

If the codeplug file was originated from that radio just directly write to the radio without using the cloning feature.

When using the Clone Wizard with XTLs you have to have patience:
1) Read the existing IDs....radio will power off then back on (power cycle)
2) WAIT
3) Wait until the radio powers fully back up then hit program.
4) Success.
I have worked with XTLs and the clone wizard with USB cables for years.
This is the way it has always been.
Just wait for the radio to fully power back up after first reading the IDs.

Radio still powers off immediately after I hit program. I adjusted the timers, but still no success. I'll keep playing with it.

Are you doing it on XTLs installed in vehicles? I ran into this problem before, and this is what I did, and it worked; I don't know which one did the trick, but this is how I was able to do it:

1 - I started turning the vehicles on, ensuring the voltage was good
2 - Restarted my computer, unplugged the cable, plugged it back in, reopened CPS, and went right to cloning

It was a pain for the handful it was happening to, but we managed.
