• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Does anyone know of an aftermarket supplier for the HKN6163C programming cables? The only ones I'm finding are north of $200.00. I know there used to be an aftermarket one that someone in the Pacific Northwest made but I can't seem to find it.

Any leads are appreciated.

Thanks tweiss, but it looks like they don't have it. This is the cable that goes on the back of an XTL5000 when using the O5 HHCH microphone. It has the wires for ignition sense, speaker and USB for programming. So far all I can find is some new old stock from Mother Moto at over $200.00. I just have a problem with paying over $200 for a cable, but if I don't have a choice I guess that's what I'll have to do. Just wanted to give finding the alternative a good college try.

I guess saying I have 3 of them would just be mean. And no, I'm not selling any of them.

Build one yourself from an accessory connector and a USB cable (keep the A end). You'll need the special pins from Motorola which aren't cheap, but one pack of them will go a long way. Built myself one this way for a total cost of about $30 plus half an hour working at the bench. Works like a charm.

I use a W3 HHCH (hand held control head for those that don't know the acronym) with my XTL5000 and my programming cable also plugs into the back of the radio. I use the HKN6160B which is labeled on my cable. I do not remember where I purchased it, nor for how much, but it looks like they are around $60 now. I use some serial to USB cable to connect to it and program it with a Windows 7 tablet.

My Moto cable looks like the one below. I had the USB to serial cable already. I presume this cable would work for you as well, but I am not a Motorola professional.

Build one! It's only 4 pins for the connector, and you know someone who has the pins (and I do if he doesn't) and proper crimp tool for them :)

Argh...sorry gentlemen, I ended up buying one from a radio shop in Texas. I considered getting the B model but I only have a W11 machine and I wasn't sure it would work right with an adapter. So...I guess I'll be drinking the cheap beer for awhile, but at least I'll finally be able to program this thing. I struggled trying to find a way to get a radio into my Subaru Crosstrek. I finally settled on the XTL under the drivers seat with the HHCH microphone. Getting the power through the dash was a challenge, but everything else has gone pretty easy. I should have it by Friday and I can work on the codeplug over the weekend.

Thanks again for the leads!
