To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

How do the XTS 2500 and XTS 5000 compare as far as weight and size? I have an XTS 5000 and I like it’s ruggedness features (I only use analog). The drawback is how heavy it is. I have read comments that say the XTS 2500 is lighter and smaller. Is this actually the case?

Anyone could do what you did, including me (and I did). I was looking for personal feedback from actual users who may have compared the two different radios and could talk about the differences. Not some troll who has nothing better to do than castigate others for his perceived lack of effort on their part. Really dude, just don’t reply if you don’t like the question. It really is just that simple.

Yeah the 5000 is a little bigger and heavier, not by a huge amount. I got a 4500 Mah battery for my XTS 5000, for non-affiliate scan it lasts for several days at least. I'm not sure if the 2500 can accept that type of extra powerful battery or not.

I absolutely love my XTS2500s. I'd prefer them over a 5000 any day of the week. My XTS2500 with a Li-Ion battery is comparable in weight to an XPR7550e with an extended batt. The battery isn't going to last you days like the 4500mah one on the 5000 but you have to pick weight or capacity.

I compared the two and went with the 2500 series for the better size/weight and there is nothing the 5000 can do for me over a 2500. Part of the weight savings is in the radio and part is in choosing newer Lithium batteries over NiMH and my newer batteries are 2600-2700mah Lithium that weight almost nothing. Started first with a UHF model III then I had to have more so I got a VHF, a couple more UHF, a few 900s and a 700/800.

You specifically asked how they compare in weight and size. I gave you the exact comparisons for weight and size. You didn't ask about any other differences between the radios, or any personal feedback.

Having used both radios, yes, the 2500 is slightly smaller and slightly lighter. Are you really going to be able to tell the difference between 1/2" and less than 2 oz.? That's for you to decide. For me, it made no difference.

When I got my UHF 5000, I had already owned a few 3000’s, so the accessories moved over. But when I wanted a 900 MHz radio, there was no 5000 for that, so I bought a 2500. Then I didn’t want two different series, so I sold my UHF 5000, & replaced it with a UHF 2500. The 2500 fits better in my hand, & to me seems to work as well as the 5000.

One word on the XTS5000. NTN9862. slim battery. No joke it turns it into a whole nuther radio. Feels like a feather compared to any other battery. I was never a fan of the humpback 2500, yes it is a digital waris and I don't like the antenna & knobs on the board suffering from fat gut syndrome. Ya ever wonder why you see 2500s with the antenna bent at 45 degrees? Seriously try out a NTN9862 on a 5000

Thank you! I was wondering how much difference the lithium battery would make. Sounds like a substantial difference.

Would you use an XTVA with the HHCH in the future? If so, stick with the 5000.

Also, a member on here who deals with, or dealt with, both of those radios noted they had more 2500's coming in for repair than the 5000.
That setup looks great. Does it allow for greater transmit power or does it just provide for a better antennae?
