• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I am a lineman for the county.
Sorry to backtrack a bit but if I were to only listen to dispatch and had NAS on, would I be a little safer or would I still run the same risk?

If Non-Affiliate Scan is set up correctly, there is no risk. Some even go as far as to physically remove the ability of the radio to transmit, just as an extra step.

The longer term risk is that eventually they'll go P25. The radio you linked to will not support that.

I think at this point I'm just gonna go with a scanner. I've looked at the Uniden BCD436HP a bit and I believe it may be my best option. Thank you all for your inputs!

To bad they are not already on p25, with harris radios you can set them up to not affiliate quite easily. But the software is quite expensive.

Exactly. You could buy 3, or 4 P25 Moto radios for the price of Harris CPS. So I am using a XTS2500 with NAS, & it’s working perfectly. No affiliation at all.

But don't Motorola Phase II radios cost a lot more? And even if you have the Harris software, aren't you still gonna need the system key?

The XTS-3000 works great with analog trunking systems, P-25 they leave some thing to be desired. For about $100.00 you can pick up the XTS-2500, even less if you buy an AN version which has some limitations, but I find it woks well even on P-25 trunking systems like RISCON.

When purchasing a radio, please keep in mind that the FCC has ordered all public safety / government agency to vacate the UHF-T band by the year 2020.

Not going to happen there is legislation right now to recind that portion of the Tax Code Bill that made changes to the 470-512 TV band. There are too many agencies using it and there isn't enough spectrum in the 700 mhz band to replace it.
