Hello fellow Radio Reference members. I was just wondering if it was possible to take a used or new police radio, say a Motorola XTS 3000, and program it for just scanning purposes. If it is, any tips on how to begin that process? Software?

Here is an Idea. use the search function Its allover this board. If you plan to use this on a trunked system buy a scanner. The software is only legally avalible from Motorola..

Find and read about this subject in the wiki section of this board. There is no adequate quick answer to the questions you've asked.

If the radio is V/UHF, it will work, you will only be able to scan 16 channels. 800 MHz, no.

This is wrong, it's perfectly possible to use a commercial radio to monitor various systems on various bands, including 800. It's been talked to death on this board, so pm me if anyone needs more help.
