To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi I have 2 XTS 5000 both are doing the same thing I use Z1 and Z2 for police and fire and have scan set on. I recently changed the BW from 25 Khz to 12.5 khz
because that what the police and fire dept use. After doing that I'm receiving a few police dept dispatcher distorted and cutting out, the cars come in fine ?
Yes all the police and fire are SET TO receive only But when programming the radio I had to disable receive only to set the BW to 12.5 then turn it back on
WHAT am i doing wrong ??? Any one have any ideas ??? I did look through the CPS and cant fine the problem AGC is OFF most channels are Analog the P25 are fine
no distortion. both radios are doing the exact same thing

Thank for any help-/ info

What band? VHF? UHF? 700/800? Conventional? Trunking? A little more information is needed here.
It's a UHF HIGH S version 470 to 512 Mhz and Using both Analog and p25 read my post again ! no problem with P25 just Conventional/analog
thanks

It sounds like the XTS5000's might be a little off frequency if you're getting audio distortion on heavily modulated transmissions
that will have now be far more critical of alignment since reducing channel bandwidth to 12.5 KHz

Verify that you your personalities have Rx Emphasis checked (enabled) and that HearClear is unchecked (disabled). Othwersie,
I would suggest having the "Reference Oscillator" alignment checked and adjusted if you're absolutely sure about the bandwidth.

I read it right the first time. That’s why I asked if it was conventional or trunking. You can have analog and P25 for both.
Anyway, short of seeing your codeplug, the radios may need to be tuned and aligned. However, if both radios are doing the exact same thing, it could be a programming issue. Most likely something simple, but still difficult to pinpoint without seeing the codeplug.

The FCC suspended the January 1, 2013 narrow band mandate for the 470-512 MHz "T" band, as the future use of that band is in question. Some users of those frequencies are still on wide band.

My guess as to why it's only the dispatchers that sound choppy and distorted and not the cars is that the console audio tends to be louder. Also, the cars could be programmed narrow band, while the base equipment may not be.

Spend a few bucks and buy yourself an RTL-SDR dongle and use it to scope out the signals you're trying to listen to. You will be able to SEE for yourself if the signals are narrowband or wideband. It's very handy for that and many other RF investigative applications.
