To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Helping a friend who has a XTS5000 model 2.

The radio does MDC/PTT ID etc. However it will not do the decode emergency receive ID on display or a initial alarm for receive from a pressed radio that sends the emergency. Just a MDC chirp. Here is the Service mode information. From what I understand various configurations have been tried but nothing. As he was thinking I am too, its the one setting somewhere. If not it isnt capable. But things lead me to believe its a setting. Aside from ham it is being used on a conventional setup, for his business and ham side also, with obviously the channels used for his business need the emergency button from other workers in the facility. I told him if he wants to cough the cash, it can take the Mexirola trip for over 300 bucks. But felt its worth asking as some one may know or have a idea before it gets costly. It will send a emergency to the other radios but for some reason not decode a received emergency ID on display and initial alarm. Any thoughts on this? I have the codeplug and if some one with knowledge wants a shot at changing things to see if it works, will be willing to go that route.

look in the radio wide, TPS tab, then Emergency Alarm RX Indication. you must also enable this in the MDC system used for that personality.

Is it possible if its enabled elsewhere it could be interfering with settings? So say one channel used is for monitoring aside from the transmit ones, can the RX still work? In TPS its set to Alert & display, as for MDC it is enabled, same for display and menu settings in advanced it is RX enabled for emergency call.

I was told just now that the dsp/host is old and probably the issue, but if so it wouldnt be able to decode non emergency ptt ids on regular RX, right? Because it does that fine. Just the Emergency ID is the problem.

From what it looks like from another board we have determined it to be firmware, which needs to be bumped up to 8. Idk if one can buy the firmware from M and do it yourself or it has to take the Mexirola trip.

If you have an MOL account, you can download the firmware file for free and then update the radio yourself.

I have the upgrade files, in the cvn format. etc. I heard around if the radio has firmware under 9 you need to do a step up kit prior to any firmware upgrading. That true?

I just brought one up to 15 from 4 in one step, so no, they do not need to be done in multiple steps.
