To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am programming a XTS2500.

Do I need to use a separate conventional personality for every channel that I am programming?

Could I just set up a couple of personalities, one for analog and one for P25, and use them for each channel I am programming or do I have to setup one personality for every one channel?

Thanks.

If you are not scanning trunking systems, I would create as few as you need and reuse them. Start with one and create more if you need to modify one (basically copy it and modify what you want).

No need to create a personality per channel. All channels that will share a personality (think voice type, signaling, Tx/Rx profile options, scanning, etc) can be set to that same personality. Just like you said, if you want all analog channels to "behave" the same, you can assign them all one personality, and the same thing with all digital channels.

The Personality IS the channel, and the Zone is where that 'channel' is selected. Confusing, isn't it?

Not true, you can have numerous frequencies per personality and assign each frequency to a channel. Thus multiple channels on one personality.

First of all, is the radio set up for FPP (front panel programming)? (Q52/Q53)

If so, you're required to have 15 zones with 16 individual personalities in them, for a total of 240 personalities.

If your radio doesn't have Q52/Q53, you can use a many or as little personalities as you'd like. If you plan on having more than one scanlist, the personality references a scanlist when you're parked on a channel.

A personality in the Astro25 series is not frequency bound. It is just a set of protocols that can be assigned to many different frequencies, which are set in the Zone assignments.

Typically, the radios that I set up have no more than 3 conventional personalities. One for receive only, one for P25 and one for analog. Then, I assign all of my frequencies to one of these personalities. It makes it MUCH easier to program than the old Astro days.
