If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey yall, I recently picked up a uhf xts4000 off of ebay and it came with an antenna that neither me nor those I know have been able to identify. It has the same connector as the known ones, and it appears to be flush with the radio. Could anyone identify this antenna?

I thought the antennas for the XTS4000 connected internally and that threaded brass fitting is just to secure the antenna, not the actual antenna connection.

That looks oddly similar to the antenna on the apx next series

You picked the wrong antenna, it looks like an old school cellphone antenna. It looks like that but you need the one with the red tube not black, black is for the VHF band. I know a guy that might sell you an antenna if you want me to ask him. If you have any other questions about the 4000, let me know. I've owned the UHF model for over 10 years and just picked up a VHF model a few months ago.

Btw, you can remove that red tube from the back of your radio, it's supposed to be part of the antenna that isn't there

Thanks ill ask him! it was the antenna that came with the radio, ive probably tx'd with it for about 30 seconds when I plugged in the programming cable, hopefully the preamp isnt damaged

For your sake I hope the transmitter isn't damaged either

The link I sent, I don't think they have the UHF antenna, it's someone else I know. I can ask my friend for you though

looks like you're SOL for now, he doesnt have any antennas for the UHF band. I imagine, parts will be more readily available when the situation with russia is over. They were really into that radio for a long while, a lot of parts came out from there before the embargo thing. Sounds like ill have to be extra careful with my UHF model, the antenna is usually the first thing that breaks from my experience. Dang shame though, I really love these radios. It can be a pain in the ass to get them tuned and aligned, if I were you and you have access to the astro25 tuning software, read your radio, save a copy of the calibrated values and print a copy. the unit requires a special jig to do the tuning and aligning, costs like 1200-1500 for the dang thing. Cant bring myself to buy one yet, even though I should.

This is probably bad advice and I'm sure someone will chime in but you can get the VHF antenna, the shortest one in the VHF band would be the 162-174 mhz for now if you just want to receive transmission, I dont know how well it would do or if it would be safe to transmit with it, would probably blow out the output transistor and really bad SWR.

The list below are the correct antennas for the XTS4000 per the BSM.

NAD6581 Antenna 146 – 162 MHz, 1.69” (42.8mm), Black Coded
NAD6582 Antenna 136 – 151 MHz, 1.89” (48.0mm), Yellow Coded
NAD6583 Antenna 162 – 174 MHz, 1.49” (37.8mm), Blue Coded
NAE6552 Antenna 380 – 470 MHz, 1.89” (48.0mm), Red Coded
NAE6553 Antenna 380 – 470 MHz, 5.52” (140.0mm)

oh well, thanks for asking though!
For the mean time it will make a good show piece, though I wonder what the SWR is on my current antenna, and where the hell it came from

Looking at the pic of your antenna, it very well could be that NAE6553 antenna, it's supposed to be the extended range antenna allegedly. If you measure it length wise, is it 5.5 inches?

not including the connector, its just a little bit above 5.5 inches. Correct me if im wrong but some (all?) 4k antennas were extendable like old cell phone antennas? If so perhaps that factors into the length? I looked up the NAE6553 as well and havent been able to find any pictures, so no lead there.

Also, funny thing about that, the previous owner had decided to glue the red tube into the radio, I have no idea why lol

To my knowledge, there are 4 antennas that look like the old cellphone antennas and then theres the one that looks like a standard radio antenna. It looks like you have the one that looks like a normal radio antenna. Looking at the base of your antenna, it looks like it has a high probability of being the NAE6553 antenna since with this particular radio, the RF energy is pumped out to the threads ams then antenna instead of a pin like most radios.

It's not too terribly important, you can just slip off the red tube on the new antenna I suppose. They come off very easily. I'll keep an eye out for you though, I need to consider getting a spare antenna as well. I've been looking for the belt clip for the last few months but no luck, no clue where my old one went.

Heres another pic of the antenna just for fun!

Awesome! shoot me a DM if you find a few! the belt clip is neat, but with the "high" capacity battery and my current antenna, it looks more like a radio than a cell phone even at a distance, although if you were using the xts4k in public, most people would just think you were weird lol

From my experience, once you have the proper antenna and a slim battery....majority of people will just think it's a work phone. If someone broke into your car, they will most likely just laugh at your old ass phone and look for other stuff to steal lol.

I like how you can turn off the speaker and use the internal audio like a regular phone, not to mention the vibration function

I could definitely see that, and the small form factor makes it pretty easy to hide, another reason to want the smaller antenna
