To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey all,

I have a question. I have a VHF XTS5000 Model-2 and an 800 MHz XTS5000 Model-3. I just put a freshly-charged impres battery that I use all the time. I thought it was a 3000-Mah capacity cuz that’s what it reads in my 800 MHz radio, but when I put it in my VHF radio it says 3595, that’s a 600-Mah difference in capacity... Is battery capacity controlled by radio tuning meaning my radios aren’t tuned properly or are out-of-tune? If not, how can the same battery read totally different in 2 of the same radio models? Thanks!

I just took two impress batteries and charged them in an impress charger...then placed them one at a time into two 800mhz radios and the battery information was the same for both radios. Doesn't mean there is something wrong on your end...battery capacity comes from the radio reading the battery's chip--nothing to do with radio alignment/tuning as far as I know. VHF and 800 are apples and oranges (an oversimplified metaphor). If you test the battery in two different 800 or VHF and there is a big difference with like models, then it's time to look into things--or if your numbers change drastically.

Well I’m just confused on how there could be different capacities for the same battery. Shouldn’t the battery capacity be the same no matter what radio it’s in? I tried it with 2 other batteries I have and it is the same thing, both batteries in the VHF XTS5000 had higher capacity Mah voltage than when placed into my 800 MHz XTS5000. I do know that Astro25 Tuner software program does have an option in there for something about battery but I didn’t look into it further due to me not knowing how to tune a radio. But I’m just really confused how a battery could have a higher capacity # in 1 radio and a lower capacity in another radio. I’m just not understanding it. My readings are posted below:

VHF XTS: 80% capacity 1461 Mah
800 MHZ: 80% capacity 1439 Mah

VHF XTS: 100% capacity 3595 Mah
800 MHZ: 100% capacity 2999 Mah

The first number isn’t a big deal but the second set numbers is a 600-Mah difference, to me that’s a hefty difference. Any insight would be appreciated and thank you.

What are the firmware versions? The discrepancy could be as simple as a firmware difference.

My VHF XTS5000 Firmware Ver. is: R10.00.00
My 700/800 XTS5000 Firmware Ver: R20.00.10
And my CPS Ver. is R20.01.00

So, it appears my VHF XTS5000 firmware is pretty old...

I don't trust the battery readings my radios show. They read about 500 ma less than the NNTN7392 battery analyzer. So to me, whatever the radio shows is just a rough indication of what you have. You put 10 gallons of gas in 3 identical cars, & the gas gage will be different on all 3. If you want to know the true reading, pop the battery in a NNTN7392.

Thanks Gary. I was just more concerned of if my radios were either out of alignment/tuning or the battery was messed up.
