If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

XTS5000 model II to III and FPP?

Hello everyone,
I have purchased a few xts5000 radios from eBay for GMRS. I’m still learning CPS but have successfully programmed them for the basic GMRS channels and local repeaters.

One of the radios wasn’t allowing me to clone it from the code plug from the other 2 radios. I think I now realize someone reprogrammed the firmware to a full keypad model? Am I correct in my assumption?

If so, is it possible and relatively simple to replace the housing with a full keypad model? I just so happen to have a model III 700/800 MHz that I was going to program as a police scanner. But I lack the system key. So now that radio is useless to me.

I’m assuming there’s a plug for a ribbon wire to plug the keypad board into on my model II??

Thanks,
Brad

You'll need the housing the keypad assembly with flex attached, and the keypad membrane itself. Yes, someone depot dicked an M3 codeplug into your M2 tagged radio.

Best route would be to buy one of the many el cheapo 800MHz XTX5000 model 3s and rob the parts off it.
Grab the XTS5000 basic service manual for disassembly instructions.

Thanks. That’s what I figured. I actually just popped off the housing and swapped it with the 800 I no longer have use for. It was very easy. Seems to work. I’ll need to mess with the FPP features now. There’s 16 zones I can’t delete and all have FPP options. I should had known.

Works perfectly because the original housing on my UFH had a bad PTT button. Now the 800 housing I swapped has a missing button housing but the actual button seems to work fine. I purchased a new PTT assembly from eBay. Looks like it needs to be super glued on. Should be an interesting project.
