• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hey there folks, I am on my 3rd programming cable now bought off e-bay. All three have given me the same error on several different computers. "c0000386 Radio failed to acknowledge". All 3 cables were serial cables bought from 3 different sellers on ebay. When I used a buddies USB cable it programmed just fine.

What am I doing wrong?

Well the dumb thing i would say is the wires you bought could not be compatible and your buddies USB programming cable works just fine, so you might have something your radio does not accept when using CPS.. i could be wrong so im going to limit what i know just incase someone else has a better answer.

Your cables you got must of been a rip off or your radio just doesn't accept them because those cables could be bad.

You are doing nothing wrong.

I am struggling with the same the same issue now with two of the ebay cables. I have been planning on digging into it more but from the limited time I spent trying to troubleshoot it the issue seems to be something to do with the power supply to the 232 conversion circuitry.

I have found that my old first purchased cable from a year ago works with a certain computer on the newer 2500 but the newer one now works better with my old 5000. It's really odd. There's some common issue that's going on but I haven't yet figured it out.

Have you checked the com port setting that CPS is using? I use an eBay serial cable, and have received that error when CPS decided it wanted to use the USB port.

Yeah it gave me USB or COM1 so I selected COM1.

Stop buying ebay junk cables, and buy the OEM motorola cable..... I could never understand why people purchase high end radios like 2500's or 5000's, just to skimp and buy a program cable from ebay... I think the clue as to what you are doing wrong is " I am on my 3rd programming cable from ebay and all have given me the same error"

Save yourself from more headache and buy the OEM cable, you'll thank yourself down the road..

motorola, they are the biggest C#@T$ when it comes to prices... I am not paying $300 for a $5 cable. I buy e-bay because it doesnt support motorola, and because I just dont have the money to buy a "real" cable.

With these cheap ebay cables, you have to make sure your using a FULLY charged battery. The voltage reg. circuit is junk in these cheap cables.

So try a new fully charged battery.

well lets see here, you go and spend good money on an xts5000(right), and good money on the CPS(right) (assuming it is legit software) and cheap out on the programming cable(WRONG)... what do you expect??

suck up the moto cost and get a real cable or keep trying fleabay and hope that you dont brick the radio.

why on earth would youspend all that money on software and radio and not get an OEM cable??

This is what i fail to understand... people that spend all that money on a radio, then cheap out on the cable, will be the first to talk about how much junk motorola is because their fancy radio is dead.

I have fixed several high end motorolas that were used on junk cables, and had to send back a few that could only be fixed by a trip to the depot. The end user QUICKLY learned that spending the extra money on the proper cable is signifigantly cheaper than a trip to the depot or an MSS to be repaired.

Used to be cables were simply a DB9 to a radio connector, with at most a resistor in line... not so anymore... while there are some decent non-motorola programming options out there, they usually cannot be had for 1% of the price of an original cable.

but hey, its your FL 01/82....

Just to throw in my 2 cents, as i moderate other boards on other sites, i see this as people try to post quicker without scrolling down and not deleting the quote thats in the box then the trolling begins and flame wars sparks then moderators come in and pass out infractions and suspensions if those members have already received any prior.

Ok now back to the subject :)

Even if ebay sold cheap cables, RIBS or Ribless ones, I might as well save up to purchase an OEM RIB box just to be on the safe side as i dont know if what im getting will work or a box of rocks will be at my front door.

I guess high priced items just works better and is worth while then something cheap that is 20 bucks "depending on the seller"
