If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I recently acquired a used XTS5000R. When I turn it on, it will flash between KEY FAIL and the channel number. It also gives me the option to erase the key, and shows "HwKey 1". This sounds like a trunked radio, but I was told it was VHF conventional.

This means that it's programmed to have an encryption key loaded, but one is not loaded. To get rid of that message, you would have to re-program the radio to not use encryption or load it with a KVL.

That doesn't really tell you if it's trunked or not. The flashcode will tell you if it supports trunking, and what type. If you're trying to use it to listen to Bryan's TRS, give up. It'll probably get stunned as soon as you program it up.

I'm not trying to listen to trunked on this thing. Just using it to listen to the dozens of VHF agencies around here (one of which is expressing plans to go P25).

What is the model #?

Does the antenna say Motorola 800 or Motorola VHF?

It was a still-working parts radio, and there is only one label, and has three barcodes with three different numbers on it:
Z329D0003
NUD2865A
329031235
It did not come with an antenna. I suspect the TX circuitry is fried, because I am not getting any RF output; therefore, I can not exactly tell what the freq range is.

When powering up the radio, immediately after self test press the button above the PTT (the one with two dots) 5 times. This will place the radio in service mode and will scroll thru all of the pertinant information. Post everything it says (except the serial and ESN) and we can tell you exactly what you have and what it is capable of included the band and all of the options installed (i.e. trunking, IMBE, etc).

Well, it stopped powering up, but is still drawing current. Did it possibly go into some kind of safe mode or something?

You've just been inhibited (i.e., your radio was killed).

The battery is probably at the point where it powers up and then dies.

I meant that more in humor. Do you really think your radio has been inhibited? Normally when this happens the radio powers up and tests then goes blank. You can still read the radio too. Read it and reprogram it. If that doesn't work, and you really have been inhibited, then it can only be restored by Motorola.

When you turned it off, was it on a trunked channel? The radio has to affiliate to a system in order for the inhibit command to be sent.

Just noticed you said it was parts built. You probably have other issues then.

Wrong...you can't do anything with a late model XTS/XTL, like the 5000, 2500, or 1500, or a 3000 written to with a late version CPS. Once it has been inhibited, reading it or re-programing it is no longer allowed.

It will tell you right off the bat that it has been inhibited and not allow any code-plug modifications.

No, it doesn't do anything. Refer to my statement about it being VHF. It won't power up or test. Just completely blank. No "pop" from the speaker when it powers up. It wasn't parts built, it was a parts radio with a bad transmitter.

Sounds like it was inhibited. What trunking system were you trying to listen too. The only way for the radio to work again is to contact the system admin of the trunking system and have them send an inhibit cancel request to your radio. You have a nice heavy paperweight until they do.

I never had a chance to program it with anything, so I highly doubt it was inhibited. It came from out-of-state, so the chances of it (if it is indeed 800) having the exact same data channel loaded into it are remote.

If it was transmitting before it quit, I would have noticed it on my scanners (the signal quality will suddenly drop). This did not happen.

JUST IN CASE NO ONE READ THROUGH THIS THREAD, THIS RADIO IS VHF CONVENTIONAL, NOT 800.

Is it still not powering up even with the new battery? Dumb question, but is the battery charged?

Have you tried to read it? Even if the screen appears dead, try to read it anyway. That will at least give you a clue as to whether the display is bad and can sometimes narrow things down a bit.

Ran the battery over with a voltmeter, reads the specified voltage of 7.5. I have the battery charging anyway. If it was a bad display, it would still turn on and beep, wouldn't it?

I also ran a voltmeter over the circuits inside, and there was voltage there, too; so power is getting there.

The Volunteer Fire Department my uncle works for has a tech who has some surplus CPS software that he's going to send me, so it might be a while.
