I know there are lots of HAMs on here, so here is my question:

What is the Yaesu seperation cable consist of? Is it just an RJ45 or an RJ11 cable? I'm not interested in the 'nest' or paying $30 for the kit.

When I had an Icom 208H, the seperation cable was just an RJ45, and made it extremely simle to extend, didn't need to spend the $.

So if anyone has the unit, or knows what it is, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi dimab,

Here is what I found when I was looking to make my own cable for the 7800. You can order the ready to go cable in three lengths from digikey for under $10.00.

Hope this helps. I knows it not exactly what you asked but maybe it will point you in the right direction.

It takes the same cable as the FT-857. I have both radios.

Yes, you can save yourself alot of money.

I simply used RJ12, NOT RJ11, but RJ12, which is 6 conductor phone cable. I measured it to the length I needed and crimped on two modular ends. It works like a charm. Total cost, 5 bucks. I

You can also order the cable from DigiKey, part number
H2662-07-ND for 7 foot, H2662-14-ND for 14 feet,
and H2662-25-ND for 25 feet.

The 7 foot cord is listed on page 168 of catalog T051, for $3.17 each.

I accidentally ordered the crossover cable by mistake
for myself, but that was easily corrected by cutting the cable in half and swapping the conductors and then
heat shrinking it back together.

Works fine on both my FT-857 and FT-7800.

ft-7800 separation cable

its easy to make the cable just acquire some cat 5 cable (in the color of your choice) and some phone connectors/crimpers and match the wires from the mic plug. also i made a mic extension cable so as to make the control head completely remote just need a female to female adapter for the mic end its all suer easy and works well.

I made my own. Most importantly is the polarity, pin 1 to pin 1. Standard telephone /computer cable is reversed at the opposite end. If you don't check pin config you end up with a fried remote head.

ok..some conflicting statements...i just want to be clear..so i dont fry the radio..the separation cable is a straight thru cable? meaning it is the same colors wires from pin 1 to pin 1 as mentioned? or is it reversed or crossover as just mentioned? multisync saying reversed..i am understanding a straight thru, no wire swap from one end to the other...correct?

just a quick note..i am thinking the 4 pair cat 5 cable would be useful to run the speaker extension and separation cable all in one cable...should not be any interference..again..untested...but just as sure as i get a straight answer on the pinout i will put this idea to the test..thanks all..

The 857 appears to be straight thru looking at the wire colors at the plug. If you already have the radio, you can check the short cord between the control unit and radio

Just to clarify some things here i am in the process of making a similar seperation cable for the Yaesue FT-7100 when i aquired the radio it was missing the short cable from the radio to the head unit so im having to do this all by researching the cable and engineering one myself my findings are that the cable is just standerd Cat 5 6 conductor cable witch can be obtained very cheap at most conveinient retailers..Wal-mart, Menards..home depot to mention a few im finding that the connectors on the ends that fit the FT-7100 are RJ12 connectors witch are basicly the same thing as an rj11 and similar to the rj45 but the rj45 is physicly bigger the rj12/rj11 connector is the same thing as te ends on te cord of a landline telephone with the exception most telephone cord is simply 4 conductor wire only as to where the rj45 is the bigger plug commonly found on most ethernet cables I would think for cost and time consumption Yaesue would have used the same type/size connectors on all their radios so im a bit confused how some of you say you used rj45 and others say you used rj11/rj12 as they are indeed different as far as polarity gos on the cable if you know anything about low voltage cables Straight through and pin to pin are not the same thing straight through means the seperate little wires are exactly that "straight" so on opposite ends of the cable they end up being reversed on the pins..hold both ends of any premade store baught telephone cable side by side exactly the same you will see this.....and the ft7100 anyhow requires a "pin to pin" ie pin 1 to pin 1 2 to 2 ect type cable witch is easily constructed from a premade cord simply chop 1 connector off and get a new connector and connect it to the cable by simply turning the connector and positioning it 180 degrees opposite of the orientation of the connector still on the oter end of the cable you will now have a pin to pin or what is refered to as a cross over cable in the low voltage world witch works for the ft7100 and shouls work for the 7800 7900 8800 8900 ect this info comes from many hours of comparing cords from variouse radios of my own and those of fellow hams in the area and comparing store baught pone cords

Would a RadioShack, Lowe's, or Home Depot carry the 6 conductor cable along with the RJ12 connectors?

Yes. Anyplace that sells telephone wiring supplies should have them.
About 6 years ago I bought two FT-7800Rs. I went to either Home Depot or Lowes and bought cable, a box of connectors and crimp tool for way less than what a Yaesu separation kit costs.
