This is an easy one. You purchased a "ham radio" which is made to transmit only on the ham frequencies. You are trying to transmit outside the ham frequencies, which 1st of all is illegal, & secondly, the radio as delivered is not capable of doing so. The radio can only transmit from 144-148 mhz, & 440-450 mhz. Since you bought the radio at "Ham Radio Outlet" this should have given you a clue. Do you have a ham radio callsign? What frequency do you want to transmit on? The radio seems to be doing exactly what it was designed to do, & I'm amazed your salesman didn't explain this to you. GARY N4KVE

I own an FT-7900 and if I attempt to transmit outside of ham band, it won't happen because it is a ham radio transceiver and out of band transmissions are illegal. Since you say it can transmit in 118-140 MHz, I'm guessing that it could be modified. What exactly do you see or hear when you think you are transmitting outside of ham band? If you are making a real transmission, even on low power, the fan on the back will start and the S meter will rise when making the transmission. It appears as if the radio is doing what is supposed to be doing, letting you transmit only on ham band and nothing else. If you are looking for communications while in your convoy (I'm guessing business related) maybe a different radio service such as MURS, GMRS or frequencies in the business band.

Something doesn't add up, but I don't want to use the t***l word. I've never been in an HRO that didn't ask your call sign when selling you something, especially a rig. Of course they will still sell to you if you have no license, but they would ask what you are planning to do with the radio. The response they want to hear is "I'm studying for my license, and want to listen and get familiar with the radio."

I would think you'd have to lie about your intentions to keep the transaction from taking an uncomfortable turn.

Whether the radio actually transmitted out of band as delivered from HRO is also an extremely significant question. Was it pre-owned? Modified by the OP?

Yeah, nowhere. Just another one of those feel free to ask but you may not get the answer you're looking for situations. Convoy? Shades of C. W. McCallsign so to borrow a phrase, I'm a gone. (Gone: a mythical CBeast found on channel 18 in and around Noke, New Jersey.
