• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Is there anyone running an 891 in a Wrangler? I'm interested in installing one with an ATAS-120 on an aftermarket steel bumper/tire carrier and hoping to learn from someone who's gone down that road already.

All I can tell you about the Yaesu ATAS-120 (or ANY ATAS model) is you better have an EXCELLENT ground attached to the mount. If you can run a length of braid from the mount to your chassis you'd get an ideal ground, and working HF with the tuneable ATAS would be great. Without a decent ground, my installation wasn't effective at all. Once I got the ground established, it was like opening up a new world of DX (and local) contacts.

Helped my kid with his Jeep(s). Yes, he's an addict. A couple of pointers depending on what you wish to operate.

Put in 8awg from the battery to the cab, protected with high temp loom. Fuse accordingly at the battery. At the radio end, install a relay to turn on/off B+ using the Accessory connection. This keeps from running down a battery when you forget to turn off the radio.

Secure radios good. His friend had uses 6-32 aluminum screws to hold in his radio, and it broke loose while on Drummond Island on the dirt roads. BTW some of the guys use CB channel 4 (AM) is considered the heads up channel for Jeeps around here.

On his new Jeep we didn't have a problem with noise, but on the Willys we had S6 of noise which would ruin comms, and the VSWR would bounce around. Solution was the braid from RG-8. with 5/16" lugs at each end, grounding the tub, axles, etc to the frame. Don't depend on metal to metal contact as corrosion, paint, and powder coating are restive, if not an insulator. Once bonded, problem solved.

If on low bands, get a large antenna with ball and spring. The small 23" - 40" fiberglass whips are very inefficient. With the Hustler and 80 meter resonator I was able to work him from 40 miles away. Side note, tell riders in the back of the Willys not to grab the whip while in the back seat and the operator is transmitting.

I don't have a Jeep but run low band in my truck, and sometimes highband/2-meters. Same issue with GMC, bonding sections of the truck, including engine, to the frame lowers the noise.
