I have an FT-897 and when you key (push PTT) radio it takes 10 seconds for it to go into transmit. I have looked at every forum to find a cure, however nothing comes up. Anyone have any ideas???

Is there an antenna tuner trying to find a match? Perhaps the SWR is so high that the antenna tuner is not finding a match and gives up. The radio possibly would then transmit at a greatly reduced power level to protect the finals. The next time you transmit, the antenna tuner would try again to find a match and gives up again possibly 10 seconds later.

What is your antenna’s SWR without an antenna tuner and what is your power out when transmitting?

Thanks Chaplain,
It does this even when connected directly to a dummy load. I use a manual tuner and have used another 897 on same antenna/tuner and it works fine.

I may be wrong, but there are settings for PTT delay to allow for tones to key up repeaters and such. Maybe just set longer than is needed.

Do you have a straight key to operate in CW mode? That would be a good test to see if you still have a long delay before the rig starts transmitting. Just hold the key down for 15 seconds or so.
