Yaesu: Yaesu FT-897D

I have a Yaesu FT 897D that I just charged the batteries with the CD-24 Yaesu quick charger. The radio has not been used in a number of years. When connected to the power supply everyrhing works fine. When I tested operations on battery power the LCD goes dark after a few seconds. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be?

Check the voltage. Sounds like the batteries are not holding a charge.

I have that radio and the display will go dark to save battery life. If you move the tuning knob or press a function button, the display should briefly return if the batteries are good. If the display doesn't come back on after moving the dial; then the batteries are probably not holding a charge.

When I had an 897D the batteries lasted less than 2yrs with occasional use and they were toast. Even when new the batteries had poor capacity.

Thank you for the response. The batteries are holding a 15v charge. Your response makes total sense and I believe that is whats happening. Thanks again. Walter
