I've been digging into getting PinPoint APRS working with my Yaesu FT-991A, and I’m hitting a snag that’s got me scratching my head.
I'm running Direwolf 1.7 on Windows, using a USB connection to the 991A. The radio exposes two COM ports:
COM3: for CAT control and USB audio
COM4: for PTT control via RTS (this is what I’m using in Direwolf with PTT COM4 RTS)
Audio is set up using ADEVICE USB in the Direwolf config, and I’m in DATA-FM mode on the radio.
Here’s the weird part:
If I set Menu 076 (FM PKT PTT SELECT) to RTS, the radio keys up — so PTT control is working.
But in that setting, I don't hear any packet tones coming from the radio.
If I set Menu 076 to DAKY, I do hear the packet tones coming out of the radio, but then it doesn’t key.
So it seems like PTT and audio are somehow fighting each other. I’m guessing there’s some internal routing logic in the FT-991A that’s redirecting audio depending on the mode, port, or PTT control?
Is anyone else running APRS with the 991A via USB and ran into this?
Any tips ...or any different software setup?
