I'm having some issues with the ftx-1 optima. It has to do with the AMS and c4fm. When in AMS mode it will switch to FM mode in the middle of an c4fm transmission. When in c4fm mode it cuts off in the middle of an transmission. Also in FM mode it has an long squelch tail. Yaesu is blaming noise. How can I fix these issues?

There is a DR-1X in analogue only mode, using PL on both receive and transmit that has a horribly long(in excess of 1 second) squelch crash close to me. It has made that repeater completely unusable.

I don't believe its due to noise, but due to poor design.

This is yaesu's flagship radio. The squelch tails happen on simplex too. And all yaesu repeaters here are set to AMS as not everyone has a c4fm radio. It just upsets me that this radio is acting like this and that yaesu said it's just me since no one else has reported this issue.

I just want to be able to use it as my everyday radio. Having it in c4fm only mode doesn't work if the audio cuts out in the middle of an transmission.

If it's a noise problem, I wonder if a different antenna or antenna location would help.

The FTM-400 was a flagship radio, it also didn't like AMS.

What about raising your squelch level?

AMS never worked well in any of Yaesu's radios. Stop using AMS, and just set it for digital or analog as needed.
I've never found any difficulties with AMS in any of my Yaesu Fusion radios and I have seven of them. Most of the trouble I've had can be attributed to "operator malfunction..."

Personally, I think the 991A still has the Optima beat, even in price. It's a shame Yaesu d/c them before getting the bugs worked out of the Optima.

I really wanted to like the Optima. It just seems like its one thing after another. The lack of a MARS mod on VHF/UHF is also a killer for me. No I dont want to talk SSB on GMRS, i have a 902 transverter that requires VHF up to the 160.xxx frequencies for its IF to cover the entire band for weak signal work.
