I have a dilema on two Yaesu radio will be used for ham but to also monitor other things. My question is I want a Ham radio that will transmit on 2m/220/UHF which would be the better radio the VX-6 or the VX-7. I see the VX-6 puts more out on the 220 than the VX-7. I am just curious which you think is better and why ? Any feedback you could give me would be appreciated my Birthday is coming up and need to let the wife know which one I want.

You gotta figure out how much your going to use 222Mhz. If your serious about 222Mhz, then the VX-6R is the only way to go. If 222Mhz is not your main objective, then the VX-7R is definenly the way to go. The VX-7R has lots more to offer (other than 2 watts on 222Mhz) like dual band operation, much nicer display. The VX-6R is limited on it's display, so your limited to 6 characters on the VX-6R.

The VX-7R can be bumped up to 500mW through the service menu, but the radio gets hot fast and chews threw batteries fast. Your better off if your going to use 222mhz with the VX-7R, get the Comet SRH320A antenna... The SRH320A is great on 222Mhz!!

I have the VX-6 and love it. Got it for Christmas 2005.
I did the 6 meter mod. and now have 2, 220, 440, and 6 meter, all at 5 watts.
I have many HT's and this one is my take everywhere everytime radio.

Either is a good choice as far as I am concerned.

I have not used the VX-6 but do have a VX-7. I find the 200mw on 220 gets into nearly as many repeaters as 2m does at full power. I remember hearing a couple of guys trashing the VX-7 on 220 on a very distant repeater claiming it would only go a few blocks and I chimed in full quieting from 35mi away and dispelled their BS.

I currently have a VX-6R and a FT-7800R. If you intend mainly to use them as a scanner, you may be disappointed at how much stuff you will miss due to the extremely slow scanning speed. Otherwise they are great.

Most newer scanners will scan and search about 100 to 300 channels per second. The VX-6, FT-7800, and all other ham rigs that I have used in the past only scan at about 10 channels per second and don't even have priority while scanning. If you load up a VX-6 with 1000 channels it will take well over a minute to scan them all. The Kenwood and Alinco ham rigs I have seen were even worse. They scan about 3 or 4 channels per second.

Am I missing something or is the VX-7 not 6m/2m/70cm? Anyway I have 2 VX-6R's and they are modified and work well. I like the larger display of the VX-6 over the VX-7 and have been told that the menu is considerably more complicated on the VX-7. The 6R works very well as a scanner especially with the memory bank option but the 5khz tuning step is a bummer, yaesu needs to embrace the 6.25khz tuning step in its HT's.

Sorry I was wrong the VX-7 does do 220, just with the output of a cordless phone - 300mw.
