I'm having a problem with the Automatic Repeater Shift.
I just got the HT yesterday and I've manually programmed 8 repeaters into the memory.
Of the eight I programed, 3 repeaters have independent transmit frequencies. One of the repeaters is in memory 1.
In the LCD display, the -+ (minus plus signs) are correctly displayed for the three independent transmit frequency repeaters I programmed .
The trouble is...in the other 5 memories I programmed, where a normal repeater shift should take place, the LCD should show a - or + indicating that the ARS is working...instead, I'm still getting a -+ as though all the memories were programmed with independent transmit frequencies.

I've gone back several times and reset the ARS to the ON position and then pressed the PTT switch to save the setting. The display still shows -+ when I scroll through the memories with the repeaters I programmed without independent transmit frequencies. I've read the manual over and over and I can't seem to get past this.

I guess I could just try the HT out but this will be my first time on 2m and I don't want to go on the air with something that might not work well.

Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks, Terry KB1RXB (I don't think the print is dry on my FCC license yet)

Hi Terry. It sounds like you wrote the memory using the wrong RS setting, then you are going back to the VFO mode and changing the RS to the correct setting. What you have neglected to do is rewrite the mem channels with the updated VFO settings. When you switch back to the mem channel it will still be the same as before.

DDan,
OK ...Thanks, I'll erase everything and try again...maybe I'll try programming the regular RS repeaters first and then the ITF's last.
Thank you for the quick reply!
One other thing...in the Repeater Directory, in "Notes" when there is a ctcss freq shown as 173.8/173.8 are they saying there is a ctcss freq for the uplink AND downlink?
Thanks again,
Terry

In addition to the info above, I've had Yaesu radios that wouldn't do the ARS thing for frequencies below 145.490 and never did figure out a way to "fix" that problem, so if the VX portables are like that too, you'll just have to enter the offset in the VFO and then do the Memory Write drill.

Some ham repeaters take a lesson from the commercial radio world and use the subtone on the output as well as the input. Considering what intermod and adjacent channel interference pigs most ham rigs are, I like that subtone on receive feature. Just remember that the ham rigs don't filter the subtone from the receive audio before it gets to the audio output stage, so you may hear the hum of the subtone in the receive audio.
