Does anyone know the default settings for the squelch alignment? I made the mistake of messing with it and now its only static when not receiving anything.

There is no default setting as such. The range is zero to 15. I run mine at 7.

Push the f/w button.
Push the zero key
Adjust the squelch setting with the smaller knob (toward the side of the radio).
At zero you should have an open (you hear noise) squelch.
Set it to 7 and you should be good to go. A lower number will allow weaker signals
to break the squelch. A higher number will require the signal received to be stronger
to break the squelch.
Hit the PTT to return to normal operation.

The VX-5R manual can be found online for downloading, probably via Google.

Thank you guys, I kind of got it figured out, the mistake I made was pressing tx/po band and zero and turning it on to access a sub menu.
