Is there any kind of signal booster i can buy to get my yagi to get better reception, and is there a way that i can roll a yagi line and discone line into one scanner?

What type of cable are you using and how long is is?

You can combine antennas, but you usually lose some signal in the process.

i am using lm400 and it is 50ft long

You can try a pre-amp, but results can be mixed depending on your situation.

They work best in low RF noise areas.

They also work best when mounted close to the antenna.

How bad is the signal?

the signal is pretty descent i just want the range increased. im probably asking too much of the yagi. im pretty sure it is doing its job now but i was hoping somebody had a little trick or something to get my range stronger

I don't quite know what you mean.

On an 800 MHz system you are typically listening to the reapeater site (or trunking system).
If you hear those station clearly, then you are haering everything.

Are you trying to heara site that is further away?
If som do you hear it at all today?

I live in a low RF area and have a roof-mounted 800 MHz yagi on a rotor and I have my 250D connected with 100' of LMR 400 cable. I consider my reception excellent, routenely receiving TRS systems that are 40+ miles away. However, during times when reception is less than adequate, I place a GRE amplifier between the cable and the scanner and this usually works well enough to lock on the control channel of a TRS that I usually, but not always, receive. In addition, I sometimes connect my roof-mounted discone on one side of a tee connector and the amplifier and cable going to the yagi on the other side of the tee and this seems to also work vey well; providing me excellent reception from 30-868 MHz.

First.....what is the DB on the yagi? you may have to get a larger dbi yagi antenna. Combining the Yagi and a discone will disapoint you very much. A yagi is a directional anteanna, where a discone is omni directional...so do connect the two together. Something else that you can do too is get two of the same yagis and a stacking kit and stack them. I think you will be much happier with that. Otherwise just get a bigger yagi!

Yagis

What is the best Yagi can I get for 800mhz public safty monitoring, and where to purchase one for a good price. I currently have a 6 element yagi. I am not sure what brand and db gain it has. I am trying to monitor a 800 system 35-40 miles away. There are times I can receive it, most of the time I cannnot hear it. I have seen greater reception once I installed the Yagi, over the rs discone I once had up. I feel I should get better reception than what I am getting now. I am sure there is a better Yagi available than I have now. Also mentioned in a past post it was said about stacking two Yagis. Is there a noticable difference than using one yagi. If so what kind of stacking kit do I need and where can I purchase one from. Does it matter which kind of stacking kit I need to purchase as to which Yagi I purchase. I am always looking for better reception in the 800mhz area. I am currently using LMR-400 coax, I have also seen this to help some. Thanks

How many feet of cable do you have?

Describe the reception you get now.
Excellent XX% of the time
Good XX% of the time
Poor but understandable XX% of the time.
Not receivable XX% of the time

Are there any cell towers close to your house, especially in the direction the Yagi points?

If you cant receive it at all (or very rarrely, I doubt a yagi is going to make it acceptable.

If you are getting interference froma cell tower, you may have better luck with a corner reflector.

If you are in a low noise area, it may help to add a pre amp close to the antenna.
