Yesterday, I turned on my VR-500. It showed a low battery indication, so I turned it off and replaced the batteries. When I turned it back on again, the screen was blank, and none of the keys worked. It did show the "S" icon at the top, but that was it. I replaced the batteries with another set, but still got a blank screen. I bought this thing new two years ago, and I don't use it very often. What happened?

Have you tried doing a system reset? Since the battery save indicator is on, perhaps the radio is hung up in the sleep mode. Worth a try (though any programming you have done will probably be lost):

Turn the radio off.
Press and hold the [FUNC] and [MONI(LOCK)] keys while turning the radio on.
Press the [1(MEMO)] key.
Press the [ENT(SET)] key to reset the all settings to their factory defaults (press the [CLR(P.SET)] key to cancel the Reset procedure).

I have had my VR-500 for almost 10 years with no major problems. While I can't say for sure that it will make any difference on your unit, I have read of other types of electronics that sort of get stupid if the batteries get too low. Replacing the batteries makes no difference. The cure is to take the batteries out of the unit for several hours (or a day) and then the unit will almost magically start working again when the batteries are installed. While I can't say that this will work with your unit, I don't think that you have anything to lose by trying it.
