I'm updating an SDS100 for my mom that may be having technical problems (this unit has been sent back to Uniden multiple times already), and I'm trying to fully understand the traffic in Yellowstone county. My understanding is that because the different sites in Yellowstone county are all using different frequencies, they're not a simulcast system. Can someone confirm that for me? If my understanding is correct, she wouldn't necessarily need an SDS and would get very similar performance from a BCD436HP or a Homepatrol-2. Is that correct? TIA

While not definitive doing a web search I did not notice anywhere that is was simulcast. Perhaps some of the local folks can chime in. What I did notice they sure have a lot of sites but then it is a large state.

They use 4 different sites to cover the area.
If your mother lives in the Billings immediate area, I would add the sites as
follows, Billings Courthouse 800, Billings South 800, Laurel vhf, Pompey’s Pillar vhf.
I frequent Billings often and my SDS-100, Unication G5, Whistler TRX-1 all work
on this system!

Thanks for the responses. @aprswatcher I was hoping you might chime in, as it looks like you're pretty active in this area. If you have time for a little more clarification, I have 2 more questions about this system.
1. In the Sentinel software, it seems to import all of the sites into a favorites list whenever I add a talkgroup. That seems to slow the scanning down, and my understandin of the system is that since those other sites are all over the state, I would only realistically be hearing from the ones you mention (and State Prison, I think, which looks to be downtown). I have taken to just manually deleting all of the other sites. Is this the "proper" way to do this? It's kind of a pain that you can't import single sites to a favorites list, and I have to start over if I accidentally delete one that I needed or want to add an additional one in.
2. She also has a Homepatrol-1, which I understand can't do P25 II. The MT trunked system indicates it's P25 II, but it seems to still pick up BFD and Yellowstone County Sheriff from that system. Can you explain why that might work on an HP-1?

Regarding #1, Sentinel will pull all sites and talkgroups into the FL, so you'll have to delete what you don't want to scan. ProScan works the opposite way, letting you select only what you need. Whichever one you use, you're correct in that all the things you can't receive/don't want in the scanner will slow it down, sometimes a great deal.

Delete all the tower sites except the 4 you need. That will work. I use Proscan software it is by far more user friendly as eafrizzle

I have never used a Home Patrol so I don’t know much about them.
