hi so im trying to get into the radio scanner hobby and i really wanted to listen to my local pd channel and the fire department. i bought a sds card of my pc and had some fun with it i learned how to find the different broadcast it wasn't to hard but when i tried to listen to my local channel i couldn't get any real audio come to find out they use a digital system and it was going to take a bunch of addon programs and stuff to decode the digitalness of the broadcast. so i went and bought a digital police scanner the whistler 1065. so now i am somewhat lost i tried to program it by watching a youtube video but there are a bunch of things i have no clue about i kinda thought i would just be able to tune into the frequency and listen to the radio chatter but i guess it was a pipe dream. is this scanner even cappable of listen to my local pd 453.7875 2023.01.01 W1KNE i dont know if this will help but this is the info i have not sure what to do with it but i programed the frequency and i got nothing

Welcome to the forums:
Yes we need specific agencies you're trying to bring in so we can get eyes on the database & identify potential pitfalls which may hinder your monitoring efforts (encryption, simulcast distortion, among others) to determine if your scanner is the right tool for the job. Keep in mind the WS1065 is a P25 Phase-I capable trunking scanner. You'd be SOL if what you're trying to monitor is Phase-II. So yes, specifics please. Frequencies alone aren't enough info

From searching what you posted, I'm guessing you're in Plymouth County Massachusetts.

Try posting over in the MA subforum and they can help. Otherwise, anyone trying to help might be a long way away and only going by whats shown in RR.

Please post a link to the system you are trying to listen to, or tell us the city, county and state and we will find it for you.
Likely East Bridgewater Mass PD (Conventional P25)

Yes the 1065 will do P25.

Did you assign the entry to a ScanList ?

Try this,
Go to Tune
Type in 453.7875 and hit enter.
Sit there for a couple of hours, see what you hear, then we can move onto your ScanLists

If you programmed the freq into Scanlist 9, then after step 9, you'd have to press 'Scan' and make sure that Scanlist 9 is in your scan.

Let me suggest a simpler thing to start with.

Step 1 - press TUNE
Step 2 - Enter the frequency
Step 3 - The mode should show as FM or maybe au. Anything but AM should work
Step 4 - press ENT (the frequency isn't being monitored unless you press ENT)

You should now be parked on the freq you entered. I don't think you need to actually set the freq to P25. The radio should sense it if in FM mode.

See what happens. The 1065 is a good radio and pretty user-friendly. You can still listen to single frequencies using this method until you get the hang of programming it.

73/Allen (N4JRI)

ps - Your problem with programming could be one of several things.
1 - You need to make sure that the radio is scanning (Press SCAN) and make sure that Scanlist 9 is appears on the screen while scanning.
2 - If just letting the radio sit there, you may need to go to Manual mode. When in Program mode, the radio doesn't actually receive the displayed freq. Press MAN and see if things get better.

Step 3 - Conventional because it is not a Trunked System.
Step 7 - Because the agency is P25 , not the ole school Analog
Step 8 - thats fine, but it you know the NAC it can be used to eliminate Westford who uses N315

What are you using for an Antenna, from Weymouth I can hear EBPD without an outside antenna.

Yes, that's why it's called a scanner 🙂
A lot of towns around our area that go P25 will keep their old analog channel as a 2nd channel for interoperability with surrounding towns and other agencies that are still analog, like most fire departments.

EBW PD2, FD and even DPW are all old school analog, you should have no problem getting them. I can receive EBPD from I-95 (15 miles due west) without much of an antenna. Using a preamp helps though. Have fun. A lot of Plymouth County towns have gone P25 recently. Plymouth is about to as well.

There a plenty of departments that have a secondary channel. Used for ?? Varies
Quincy it is their CJIS/NCIC aka listings, wanted etc
Plymouth is used for large events, similar to Marshfield....

only by listening will you determine who/what uses what.

EBPD moved from T-Band to 453 in the past few years and may have actually abandoned T-Band, but as
hobbyists, from monitoring we won't know unless we listen, often

glad you got the PD in, now to add the Fire

Don't forget the PD/FD mutual aid channels, for the Big Fires/LE Events
BAPERN and Plymouth County Fire do get used regularly
