Santa has ordered a PSR 500 for me this week!!! I am slowly gaining an understanding of how to program TSYS/TGRPs in the scanner after downloading each of the software titles (I seem to be gravitating towards Win500) and re-reading the downloaded PSR 500 manual a few times. One question I have at the moment is when setting up a TSYS, does a separate TSYS need to be set up for each “Site” or can one use multiple “sites”/CC’s for one particular TSYS. From reading about the Roam feature I think that somehow plays into the answer but I’m not sure.

Let’s suppose I want to monitor the DCSO and even if this is not accurate let’s suppose they can be monitored on 3 different local sites. Now, let’s say I’m in the middle of those sites and I’m not sure which one to use since theoretically they are not blocked on any of these fictitious 3 sites. Can I create one TSYS “DCSO” P25 using all CCs for these 3 sites or do I need to create 3 TSYS’s one for each site?

As I mentioned before I am confused about the ROAM feature. The reason I’m looking at this feature is because I live in Castle Rock and commute to Aurora. I would like to have a “home” scan list , a “Traveling” scan list so I can listen on the way to work, and “work” scan list to listen while at work.

Thanks for reading this long post and for any help. I am allowed one day with the scanner when it arrives prior to it being put under the tree to taunt me every day. And thank you to 04Z1V6 who has graciously offered to help me program the scanner upon it’s arrival so I have a working toy on Christmas Day.

No, a separate TSYS does not need to be set up for each site. You can have numerous sites (I think up to 32) on one TSYS. If you go into each TSYS you will find a place to enter the control channels. Theoretically, you could enter 32 different active control channels and have 32 sites in one TSYS.

Regarding your DCSO scenario, yes, you could create a TSYS for one talkgroup, and enter the three sites' control channels. Although I've never done this, I would guess that would ensure you wouldn't miss anything on that talkgroup (assuming 100% of the time at least one radio from that agency is affiliated to one of your three sites).

Regarding your roam question, that might be better answered by someone else. I don't use the roam feature when I'm "roaming". On my TSYS's with multiple control channels, I use the "stat" feature, but the next guy will probably tell you something else.

Good luck, and enjoy.

Do not use Roam. All sites are not created equal. If you had roam on, and you scanner was only looking at a Site that didn't have DCSO on it, you would never hear your TG. If you use the stat mode, your scanner will look at all of the CC you have programmed into the TSYS.

Thanks for helping. I'm trying to learn all I can. So theoretically one could create just one TSYS with all the Sites/CCs for everything they wanted to monitor assuming everything else being equal such as the system type? If I'm correct then I would also assume the reason you would not want to do that is there would no longer be any ability of scan lists which is why one would want to create seperate TSYS's. Is that the only disadvantage to that approach? Am on the right track here? Is there a performance or other advantage besides scan lists to creating TSYS's based on one Site per TSYS?

Let's see if I'm on the right track:

For my "home" scan list for DCSO and CRPD I would use Site 103 with CC 853.525 an AC 852.925 and 9853.2 with the appropriate Dec ID's. I could also use this TSYS for DC Fire Ops or I could create another TSYS in order to be able to have these in seperate scan lists if so desired. And that would be the only way to seperate the objects by scan lists?

So do we basically set up each TSYS based on what we want to be able segregate as we monitor?

You can have multiple TG's in a TSYS. Once you have a TSYS created, you have the option per TG to select what ScanList you want it in. You can program DCSO, DCFD, and CastleRock in one TSYS, then have them all in seperate ScanLists, i.e. DCSO in 1, DCFD in 2, and CRin 3. Try to limit how many CC's you enter into a TSYS, the more you put, the longer it will take the scanner to look at every CC and scan it for your selected TG's. Also, you can have multiple TSYS's in one ScanList.

The way I program my 500/106 is by County. I put in the CC's I think work for that county I have singled out. I try to put no more than 10 CC's per TSYS. I think its also easier to manage what agency I want to monitor per ScanList by having them grouped per County.

Thanks Erik, the light switch just went on. I'm going to try and create some Win500 files now. There doesn't seem to be many Co samples to pull. A sticky for files might come in handy, especially for newbies. It really helped once I downloaded a file you created in another post to see a working example.

Jim, Just PM an email address and we'd be happy to share some local win500 files.

PM sent. Thanks for all the help. Now that I'm trying to create a file it almost seems more daunting trying to figure out what you want and where vs how. Below are some things I know I want, any recommendations for other interesting traffic I am not thinking of.

HOME:
State Police
Douglas County Sheriff
Castle Rock Police
Douglas County Fire

WORK (Airport and 33rd by Mile High Harley):
Aurora PD
Aurora FD
Buckley AFB
DIA

Maybe Jail

AF Academy

Local Mil Air

Air Show Freqs

I have attached my first attempt using Win500 of creating a few scan lists for review. Please let me know if you notice anything that requires attention. I did not change any general or extended settings as I'm a bit behind that learning curve. I am also not entirely sure of boxes to check in the pop up box once IMPORT is clicked.

I'm having some difficulty finding Buckley AFB. I would like to if possible, listen to some of the air comms from fighters.

It appears that I will have to manually enter in known air show frequencies as I don't see a place to download them form RR. I'm not sure how to go about that.

How can I later add more TGRPs to one of my existing TSYS's?

Thanks.

Since you're at 33rd/Airport you'll want to listen to the folks at Flying J on 151.7 with a 67.0 PL. It's exciting!

I'll be sure to add the Flying J, thanks.

Erik mentioned copying the files into excel then pasting them into the software so I just wanted to share that if you format all your cells in Excel for Text and when you paste the information choose paste special and then choose text, it will space the information into columns for you. I have attached my excel file of the DTRS if it can be of any use for anyone. Thanks for all the help. I'm continuing to play with the software and I'm sure I'll have more questions but you all seem to be a gracious group so I know I have some good guidance here. Thanks again.
