The airborne Combat Air Patrol is for aircraft and generally most general aviation pilots will fly in daytime VFR. Other general aviation and business aircraft are usually on flight plans and are controlled by ATC. Yes there are some VFR general aviation flights that occur after dark but the number is less than daytime VFR flyers. So technically the threat is probably considered less after sunset and before sunrise.
yeah i guess it would be a lot of work to get trained to fly well enough to go VFR after dark. Far more difficult than low level precision flying of a commercial airliner at high speed into a target barely wider than its own wingspan.
but what do i know. i am not privy to the threat matrix.
Unless the "assassins" are in an aircraft....then they are not the concern of the airborne units. That is the job of USSS ground units around the property.
well its a relief to hear that. you can bet if i was a neighbor and thought the F-15/F-16s were engaging ground targets, i would be well versed in the nuances of projectile dispersion from a 20mm rotary cannon.
and then i would put the house up for sale.
I am sure they adjust the times of the CAP based on intelligence provided to NORAD and based on the intercepts handled recently they are performing the function for which they have been tasked.
i'd make a joke about military intelligence here but as i am possessed only of civilian intelligence, i shall demure.
