All of the above statements are true... the facts remain simple. GRE built a great scanner a year or so ago known as the PSR-500... true, because of the newness of such an incredibly detailed and feature packed digital scanner, there was room for refinement. GRE did this via firmware upgrades, to eliminate a few bugs. I understand that GRE is up to date with thier available updates for PSR scanner owners. RadioShack's version the Pro-106 (Built by GRE) was produced recently, and those bugs were addressed prior to mfr. and distribution, so PRO-106 owners do not have any updates to download... as of this date, as far as I know. Both scanners do the same thing, and they do it very well. They are, for all practical comparisons, identical except for a few physical features. I feel even those features are intreaging. I enjoy the layout of the faceplate on the Pro-106, it's smart. As far as the carry case is concerned, some manufacturers leave those aftermarket products up to outside manufacturing sources... since the Pro-106 seemed to take off so well, I expect a well made, wonderful looking carry case is in the works by somebody, or some company. I would pay good money for a handsome, rugged leather case. If I had the money, I would design and mass produce such a case myself, for the Pro-106 enthusiasts, as the market seems to require one right now. The biggest difference between the two superb scanners, is the fact that RadioShack (wanting to make thier end of the year numbers look good) sold the Pro-106 for an extremely reasonable price to many of us who were interested in a $500.00 version of a digital scanner. I was able to purchase one for $299.99 (when it was available-in stock) and it was well worth it. At that sale price, I was able to purchase a USB cable, wall-wart, rechargeable batteries, aftermarket programming software, and a premium subscription to the Radioreference, and still be under the $500.00 costs associated with most scanners of this caliber. I doubt if RS can offer such a good deal ($299.99) for this scanner in the future, and I haven't really seen many PSR-500 sales, so all's well that ends well. Welcome to the age of the $500.00 scanner. Hats off to the hobby members who purchased thier 106's at a great price... hats off to GRE for manufacturing a terrific scanner (for PSR and for RS) and hats off to Radioreference.com for allowing us the opportunity to share valid comments between the two scanners on a forum. Happy monitoring, and have a wonderful day.
PS, to all RR members who currently own the Pro-106 model. Please show off your 106 pride by visiting and joining a wonderful little social group, right here on Radioreference... its the RadioShack Pro-106 Owners Group, a public group, and I invite all Pro-106 owners to visit us, drop in, and have some fun. Many members stop by to post thier serial numbers and date codes, as a way of showing off thier pride in ownership of this remarkable little scanner. Yes we are cute, and here is the link...
