i was picking up my station's QRV from maintnence and i passed a blue ford taurus with SC plates had 5!! scanner antennas in a x formation and a sirius service antenna behind them.

I like scanners too but man there isn't that much need to have so many antennas. 2 0r 3 scanners are good but 5?? i know whoever this guy is has to be part of this website. i would like to see the inside of his car and see what they're running

How could you be sure of how many were scanner antennas?

When I finally get my stuff installed in my car I'll have 5 or 6 antennas.

5db 800/1900 for my phone
800 for the scanner
two dual band 2mtr/440
VHF 1/4 wave
Not sure about 6m, 10m, or any HF.

That's without any buisness or Public Safety radios.

At the same time, what is the need for two dual band ham radios?

U talk on one, desense the other...seems kinda silly to me.

Four or five antennas in an "X" or square pattern on the roof would more-likely be someone with direction-finding, LoJack, or engineering equipment for mapping signal contours for a land-mobile or broadcasting station.

We can smile at the tv commercials, where the guy asks, "Can you hear me now?" But taking measurements of the signal levels of one's cell system, as well as your competitor's signal levels is the same markets, can be a lucrative profession.

Are you sure that Sirius antenna wasn't for GPS ?

If you get another opportunity to pass a similar vehicle, look for a laptop mounted on a swivel tray, or laying on the passenger's seat.

didn't think about it

yea it may have been gps, little rectangular blocky thing, just thoght it was sirius. it could have been that but it looked exactly like the except it didn't have that second senter mount thing on it so it might have been signal checker. if i see another one, i'll make sure to slow down not pass it and see if they have a laptop

Celluar have dedicated vans with more antenna's than most ham's (usually at least) on them. Usually these van's are marked, or fairly obvious.

The days of the station wagon setups are pretty much nil. At a recent trade show, several of these were showcased from a vendor who constructs such vans. They had ones from Nextel, Verizon and T Mobile there. Pretty snazzy setups.

I never said I had two dual band radios. I said two dual band antennas. One would be for my 2mtr, the other can be used with one of my HTs. There are times where It's useful to have a radio locked in on one freq. Mainly skywarn :D A dual band antenna works best for mt geberal needs. 2mtr/440 transmitting, VHF/UHF scanning, and actually does a pretty good job on loband as well.

Plus the dual band antennas are shorter, and don't shout out "Hamsexy" as much as a bunch of 5/8 wave VHFs

Two antenna's that work really well that I have used, are the Diamond NR770HNMO and the Diamond NR72BNMO.

The first one came off my truck at Dayton for the other one. Difference? The first one is a foldover 39" antenna and the other is 13". I thought I would loose a lot with the 1st being a 1/2 - 5/8 wave antenna vs a 1/4n - 1/2 wave, but both seem to be equal.

Plus now in the winter, I won't have to climb up on the suburban and fold the antenna over to get into the garage!
