Youloop and what I got - sorry for the rant

Let me first say,
I am not a fan of internet bashing and I will do my best to keep it on the level for others to make their own decision on the YOULOOP antenna, Customer service anyway.

After a VERY long time of reading and thinking about spending the money on this type of loop ( I own a W6LVP), I finally decided to give one a try since I bought an ATS25 MAX DECODER for kicks out side or travel.

Day1 - Well, I received the YL, plugged it in to the ATS and got static. I messed around with settings, checked connections and I have WHO1040 just 12 miles away blasting 50k watts, known as the blow torch of the Midwest. (I am sure you have heard of it. lol.) Nothing but static on the ATS. The supplied cheap telescope antenna works fine.

I then took the YL and plugged it into my SDRPLAY2. Same thing, static. I plugged the cheap ATS telescoping antenna on port B and 1040 came in, switched to port A and static again. Checked settings and monkeyed around, gave up and went to bed.

Day 2 - I emailed the place where I bought it. Some Spy location. wink wink And told them just my experience and about the 50k watts.
They replied promptly "Check continuity of the cables, crossover and tee".
I thought it was odd, but I have the ability and did just that. Everything had continuity, EXCEPT the center port of the tee going to the radio.
I replied "The tee is dead at the antenna out connection".
They replied, again promptly, "Do you mean the center conductor? Did you check to all other points? It's not a straight tee."
I replied, "Yes, center conductor of the tee. Where it goes to the radio."
Their reply, "And it has no continuity to any other of the 5 points?"
ME again, "I checked the cables,OK. Checked the crossover, OK. Checked the tee, dead at the center, continuity on the outside" <- (this is where I may have screwed up with wording)
they went silent.....

4 days later - I email in the chain, "any response?"
Their reply "You said it has continuity on the outside. We asked if that means continuity to both other shields."

Well, here's were it went South. I asked, "do you always put your customers through this kind of treatment!??!! Is this how you want people people to treat you when you when something isn't right? I replied the best I can for you! Everything has continuity EXPECT the center post of the bottom (out to radio) post"
I could have sworn I made it clear already....? Why is a seller just assuming I had the ability to do this type of diagnosing. They never even asked if I could. What about the person that doesn't!?

Anyway, after way to many emails today back and forth with them, and yes, I told them they don't have the best reputation on the forums, they FINALLY asked me to return it to them to diagnose! On my dime of course, AFTER SAYING THIS, "It was a basic diagnostic anyone with an ohm meter should be able to perform. Return the product and we will diagnose it"
Funny thing is, I don't remember reading that in the description that I might have to diagnose it on my own before I bought it. Silly me, I just thought it would work and if not they would make it right..?

Well Sir/Ma'am, it ain't happening, sending it back.
This is piss poor customer service.

Speaking of my W6LVP. I left it outside one evening on the tripod (lazy). The wind came up and blew it over breaking a BNC connection. I emailed Larry and told him about it. Instead of having me diagnose it and check this, check that and then tell me it's a simple process ANYONE can do. He sent me a brand new PERAMP at no charge, other than shipping!! That preamp cost more than a piddly 40$. When in all reality the YL tee cost maybe 3.00? to produce. AND YES, I let the seller know of this but I am sure I wasted time doing so.

SO, with all that said. Choose wisely folks

Rant over..... putting my flame proof britches on now.

Stay tuned folks!! Seems the email that I have, the place where I bought the YL from, a verified supplier, is not the right one for talking about these types of problems!! I wrote direct to Airspy and got a replay from THE man himself, Youssef! He says he has no idea what I am talking about as far as communications so far. LOL!!

I hope someday, someone will invent a thing where you can actually speak to someone. I think calling it a telephone would be a fine name for it! :giggle:

Get a new one? Fixed it? What? Mine is working fine. Am using a LAN-IQ with great success. This is my 1st loop. Will be researching for an outdoor one in the spring.

New one is being sent per Youssef.
Loops are the only way to go. I started out with a Par Endfedz SWL. Works great, but the noise floor is there also.
Raining tonight here in central Iowa. Fired up the SDRPLAY 2 and W6LVP in the house and was listening all over the country. Can't do that with a piece of wire.
Looking forward to the YL to try with a ATS25 to mess around with.

You don't hear that often! (at least not from people on these forums)

I've never personally had a problem with him. Glad he is sending you another.
He was great! It didn't take but 5 minutes. It wasn't HIS fault for all the run around. It was the supplier I bought it from listed on his website here in the States. I hope he had a nice talk with who ever runs the joint so no one else has to go through that.
I have read in to many places where some people aren't able to waste to much money to enjoy the hobby.

Youssef is a stand up man, period

I have several loops here, a W6LVP, MLA-30+ with little use and a home made 3ft passive shielded with external amplifier and a PAR end fed SW works much better in most cases across the HF/SW bands. The loops excel on VLF below the AM broadcast band but I get better SNR and higher signal level on all my various wire antennas here above the AM broadcast band.

I may pick up better with my wire but the youloop sounds clearer for me. I compared on different signals from 5 to 8MHz. Pcrguy, are you using the wires that came with your Par End fed? I changed to a single long wire about 50 feet coming out of the house through some trees.

I have a stock PAR SW with 45ft of wire, many home made 9:1 balun types with wires ranging from 30ft to a lot and just about any wire antenna over about 30ft long in the clear away from the house receives better than my loops. I can't remember the first time I tried a loop but it was a long time ago and it was a good experience but seemed more for the space limited folks. Loops have worked much better indoors than a wire indoors for me. I've been an SWL since about 1967 and have used every kind of receiver and antenna you can imagine.

I try to buy direct so I don’t go through the crap you did.
Roger that! But, when you go to Airspy and click to buy, it redirects you to their verified supplier(s). That is exactly where I bought mine. There are 5 to choose from. I choose the US location.

I too, have a Par Endfedz SWL. I bought when it was still made and sold by the original maker way back when. It is what really got me going in this section of the hobby. I was amazed by what I could hear with a "piece of wire" and a R71a. The loops are, for me, the easy way to go. But I still have and use that EF-SWL from time to time. I just need to set up a more permanent location for it.
I really need to get it set up to A-B it along with my loop on the SDRPLAY 2.

You re-sparked my "get-r-done" nerve! (y)

Update for anyone that cares.
Received the Tee replacement Youssef said he would have sent, it works and works pretty darn well!
I have it hooked to the SDRPLAY 2 along with the W6LVP, comparing back and forth. Sure the W6LVP is stronger RX, but the YL is hanging right in there. To be really fair, the W6 is outside and the YL is just hanging in the house, set there in haste to try out.
I bet this little sucker (YL) would/will be great out and about at a park or for travels.
I bought it with intentions to use with the ATS25 Max-Decoder on the deck.

Thank you Youssef!

Glad you got it figured out and working good. Am enjoying mine. My 1st loop. Want to come up with something for camping to deploy easier. Maybe some thin PVC in a cross inside with a way to mount on a short pole.

Am considering an outside loop in the spring for the house. Still researching. But the youloop needs some kind of structure so I can just mount it on a pvc pole I have with a tri pod. Was using a mini discone with this setup.

If you want it more secure and less "fiddly" that would be the way to go for a more permanent mount. Although the coax it comes with is fairly solid. I have some suction cups with hooks to put on a window at the moment.

It's a pretty convenient little antenna to play around with.
