I have owned scanner radios since the days of crystal radios. My son is in firefighting training and I would like your opinions for a Christmas present. It must be handheld, digital with trunking ability. I am a loyal Bearcat ( from when it was only Bearcat) and Uniden user, but am WIDE-OPEN to your suggestions. I have researched Radio Shack, Uniden,Bearcat. I have seen GRE on the internet only and know nothing about them...Good or bad. Please feel free to Love, Hate and be totally honest about anything. But let's not slam each other's opinions...everyone has his/her own opinions. Thanks in advance!

My opinion is that you should wait 'til after xmas, and get a better price!
Also, it probably will be after xmas that the new BCD396XT will come out.

I have had many Uniden scanners..Loved them until my area was rebanded.
My 396 follows the rebanding but with issues. I have never,, never got it to decode P25. I have messed with it for months.
Pro-106 does it with zero issues.

So as it stands Uniden has been good to me. But right now I am unhappy with the one firmware update, and the many that have not been released. BCT15/246T and 2 months away or more for the 330T.

So those sit with no Moto Trunking until they released.

I am pretty amazed how long it has taken to get the rebanding features added.
Honestly thought they would have had them out before my area made the switch. But nope.

I love the Pro-106 hands down. For me, I will be getting more 106 or PSR500's and maybe three Pro-197's

PSR500! I have been in the hobby for about 25 years, and WOW have things changed. The RS 106 is the same as the 500, but I just like the looks of the 500. Be prepared!, it is one complicated scanner! The Win500 software is awesome! It does cost $35 after a trail period, but is well worth it!
