Well I reviewed the 245 and 895 versions of this program and was not greatly impressed. The only thing that was interesting because it seemed to work OK was the claim of being able to program 10000 channels.....

I think you'll find that Scan Control is the champ on the 2052. Ken D. (the author) can be found on the Scan Control Yahoo group for support and tech questions. The URL is:

I found this post in the archives. It is Jan 2006 and I would like to know if Scan Control is the best and eaisest software to program a 245 XLT. Also I have an ICOM R-2 and would like to know what software is best for that . Thank you

I purchased and used both ScanPro2052, and Scan Control, that the others mentioned. ScaPro2052 just works, and for $14.95, I can't complain. I also purchased the full version of Scan Control, and although it is better, I wasn't overly impressed for the $40.00. If I had it all to do over again, I'd probably be content with just using ScanPro2052, with that particular radio (PRO-2052).

I can see where Scan Control might be more desirable with other scanners.

I've written several software reviews for the 245; personally, if you're going to upgrade to one of the digital scanners, Scan Control gives you a very easy upgrade path for your data (hopefully soon, SC will support the 246 and 396 as well). In most cases, the upgrade path for your data is automatic; this means that if you have 245 data, and let's say you connect up a 796, SC will migrate the data for you, as much as it can (there are, of course, some constraints; for example, SC cannot set the tone data, since the 245 doesn't support tones). SC even comes in a Lite (programming only) version, and you can then later upgrade to full version (including the CSV support utility) for a nominal fee. They even have their own Yahoo support group.

If you're going to stick for the 245 for awhile, SC will serve you well; however, there are a few free utilities such as IDTracker, BC245Int/Senss and even Control Freq Jr. that are worth looking at.

I'm much less familiar with the R2; however, ARC2, being a BuTel product has to be in the running. If you're a Linux man - and we have more than a few on this board - Bob Parnass' tk2 is worth investigating. 73s Mike
