You know the old saying "parts is parts" aint exactly so when it comes to scanners. I own both of these models as well and the audio on mine are the opposite of what's in the video. My 500 sounds better and the 106 was a bit tinny when I got it. Today however I noticed that the audio of my 106 has gotten slightly more bassy. Come to think of it my 500 was tinny and harsh when I got it but now sounds much better. Hmmm, weird, do speakers have a break in period?
I have the Pro-2053, Pro-97, Pro-2050, Pro-94, and the BCD396T. I want to buy a new scanner the Gre Psr500 or the Radioshack Pro-106 are this scanner the same in all the features that one has the other also have them install.
As far as features and function they are exactly the same. The keypad layout is exactly the same also. The only difference is the front panel of the scanners. One has the speaker at the top and the other has the speaker at the bottom. The colors are also different on the front panels. Everything else is the same.
That was really cool. Thanks for taking the time to do it.
FWIW, I would love to see a side by side comparison of the 500/106 vs. the Uniden 396 on a digital transmission as I have heard GRE is better on decoding digital.
The coloured LED is nice
although I think some Uniden fans would disagree that they are the BEST SCANNERS EVER
digital audio sounds better then most Uniden but I have had times where the 500 / 600 are all just digital motorboating and the 396/996 are decoding them fine.

My findings have been the exact opposite. I think the new GRE/Radio Shack scanners work very well, no motorboating at all, and clear, loud, natural sounding audio!
I'm still in the deep south with my new 106, but I haven't heard any motorboating at all on the systems I'm currently monitoring (Palm Beach/Ft. Lauderdale area). I'm anxious to bring it home and try it on my 'home' systems to see how it stands up against my Pro-96. Certainly no complaints so far though, other than learning how to use the damn thing!
I live near the USA and Mexico Border. The Texas DPS have a commercial vehicles inspection station less then two miles where I live. They use the P25 radios. Will the Pro 106 decode the transmission faster then the BCD 3696T.
i never here digital noise and the last part or no voice transmission. on the pro-106 and gre-500 i love it i have 396t and trhe 996t with the update 3.1 no digital noise and the last part or no voice transmission at this time im in canada opp out here are vhfp25 and gotanzit
As for "motorboating", I have both the PRO-96 and PSR-500. While the PSR-500 clearly has less motorboating than the PRO-96, it still occurs on the PSR-500. It has not been totally eliminated.
