• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Well hand held digital scanners are wide band (VHF, UHF, 700/800mhz) they can decode different protocols, Analog, digital conventional, digital trunking, some with upgrades can do DMR and Provoice.

The G4 is a 700/800mhz receiver only. It will do analog conventional, digital conventional, Phase 1 trunking only. No DMR, No analog trunking. No phase 2, yet.
G5 is same as G4 but it has a second band. Can be a VHF / 700/800 OR several different splits of UHF/700/800.

G4/G5 handle trunking reception much better. But lack field programming capabilities, lack hold and lock out features, were designed for first responders and picked up by scanner people due to the good RX capabilities.

Each device has its own pros and cons. Learn those and see what fits your particular needs.

A Unication G4/G5 is pager that has some VERY limited scanning capabilities. It is NOT a scanner.

Unication G4/G5 devices can only be programmed to handle conventional channels and P25 (Phase 1 only right now) systems. They do not handle older Motorola systems, EDACS, LTR, DMR, NXDN, etc.

You cannot scan more than one P25 system/control channel at any given time.

Each "scanlist" (knob position) is limited to 64 talkgroups.

You cannot mix and match trunk system talkgroups and conventional channels in the same scanlist (knob position). Unication devices have fairly specific frequency bands (G4 is 700/800 only, G5 models add VHF and UHF but in different models).

Unication devices cannot be programmed on the fly (must be programmed with a computer and the Unication PPS software).

On the plus side, the G4/G5's are EXCELLENT on P25 simulcast systems - which is the reason many are buying them for other than their pager function.
