I have a older trunk tracker with low audio output. Its still usable although you have to turn the volume ALL the way up. Is this a common problem with these radios? Since its all surface mount I do not see any way to replace a coupling capacitor if that's the issue. Am thinking of using amped speakers as a work-around.

sure

even try cheap computer speakers. you might have some around.
and even try taking out the plug to see if it "fixed" the problem.
my 396T and the XT have the audio cut out or low sound due to a bad jack.
i was going to make my 396T a base station this way, but this fixed it.

Try plugging a pair of headphones in and then out again of the headphone/speaker jacks (maybe a number of times) and see if that fixes the problem. Could be a dirty jack.
