• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am the "radio guy" for our local EMA. Most of our radios are the above mentioned models. My director thought it would be a good idea if we had the ability in house to reprogram our radios.

So I bought the software and cables from "the antenna farm".
I can not get the radios to read or write. I am using a serial cable and a desktop PC running standard XP. No usb-serial converters, it is going straight to the com1 port on the back of the PC.

If I try to read the radio, it says "turn the radio on". The when I do that, it says "communication Error".

My director probably wont be too happy with me if I cant figure it out.
Any suggestions?

I'm assuming that they sent you ce44 for windows. If they sent you an old DOS version. Then you will need to run a real dos environment.

As far as the windows version. Make sure that you have the correct com port selected. Vertex software is usually very reliable.

The only other tips I can offer are to make sure the radio is fully charged. Try some different ones in case you are dealing with a flaky audio/programming jack.

The software is the windows version. The cable looks after market.

I thought at first that the original radio shop that set them up locked the data from being read from the radio. But then I tried to write stuff to the radio, and it wouldnt let me do that either.

I am going to call antenna farm later today to see if he can walk me through it.
Personally, I think I am going to stick with Icom!

Thanks for the help,
Steven

Vertex makes good radios for the price. Icom will set you back 10 to 25% more for the same features.

Your problem is likely something silly. As I have found Vertex very easy to program.

I don't think that you can password protect this model. If it was you would not be able to write either.

Double check your basics before you call.

Good Luck

What version of Windows are you running? Even though its a Windows version if the software, it may not work on Vista or XP. If you have an older computer running 95 or 98, try it.

I got the mobile working. The after market cable does not work, I had to use an other vertex cable. I think that is going to be my problem. Does anyone know what the schematic is for the programming cable for the VX160 or VX354?
I would like to check the cable I have to see how it might be wired different.

Thanks for the help.
