I'm having a horrible time finding a complete listing of which VSP talkgroups cover which counties in each division.

For example, I'm pretty sure Ric 1 covers:

Richmond City
Chesterfield
Petersburg
Colonial Heights
Hopewell
Louisa
Goochland
Powhatan
Amelia
Prince George
Nottoway

But I'm not positive on those. I'd be interested in seeing which TGs cover which counties/cities in other divisions too. I have found the maps for the VHF legacy system but can't find anything definitive regarding STARS.

If anyone can pont me to a map or listing I'd appreciate it.

I found that map earlier, but unless I'm missing something it doesn't tell me which talkgroup is used by troopers in each county.

So for instance, would a trooper patrolling Halifax county primarily use App 1 or App 2 as his dispatch channel? I am having trouble figuring this out.

as far as division 3, amherst county and south is App 1, nelson north is App 2.

a general rule to go by is the division's #1 channel is going to include that division county.
I.E.- App 1 takes the county of appomattox.

This is correct for CPK 1 & 2, respectively.

For Craig County, Virginia, VSP Division 6, Area 40, the analog freq. is 158.985 plus 167.9. Please update as needed. Thanks to all contributors!

Are you saying that VSP are still using legacy freqs? I know D6 was for a while; figured that would have been turned off by now. Note this thread is almost 2 years old.

Thank you KJ4KFW for the addition. Yes, the repeater freq for the mountainous regions of "area 40" is 158.985. I have found little if any activity on 167.9, but will begin to monitor 159.000. I am still wondering what freq the VSP is using for Craig County. The code for Craig County would be helpful, if anyone knows it. Thanks to all contributors.

Salem is still simulcasting on the legacy freqs... interesting. I've since deleted those; only have the STARS tg's programmed for Salem. I wonder how long those analog channels will still be on the air.

Until the appropriate "Gap Filler" site(s) is operational

Due to poor STARS coverage in certain areas of the state one or more selected VSP analog legacy repeaters are being used until certain "Gap Filler" (my id for them) sites are operational. Approximately 10-12 new sites received funding with a few now operational, i.e., Dumfries, Glen Allen, Waverly and probably Gordonsville soon. More sites are under construction. The original sites were listed in an earlier FY report to the General Assembly from the Chief, VSP on the status of STARS statewide..

These new installations involve multi-yeared efforts and if additional funding is obtained maybe a few more new installations will be occur.

These new STARS site installations have been discussed on the RR VA forum and provide more detailed info. So until there is acceptable STARS coverage in certain targeted geographical areas, use of legacy analog repeaters will continue.

Remember VSP retains the capability to operate statewide analog as a backup system. All VSP STARS vehicle radios have the capability to operate legacy analog by a user zone/channel switch selection.

Over the past year additionally I have seen a number of DGIF user only analog licenses renewed with the latest within the past two weeks being in Chesapeake. It appears DGIF is rebuilding its' analog comm capability statewide. DGIF's policy for using STARS is primary comms will be via MDT vehicle radios with voice comms being a backup or for TAC, Special Ops., etc. That's why you hear just basic on/off duty, patrolling wherever for that shift, and an occasional TAC comm. Because of the mountainous terrain in southwest VA, which presents more comm problems, DGIF may also use analog voice comms on their non-STARS repeater and/or simplex frequencies.

I don't monitor it any more but 3/6 was active a few months back. Don't know if they still are.

Just to further add to this. Now that I said that in the last few days there has been a digital noise on the 6/12 channel whenever dispatch stops talking. Putting it over to search gets me a P25 high pitched continuous tone with a different NAC than STARS only broken by dispatches analog transmissions.

It seems the units are digital noise on the channel and dispatch is analog.

Not sure what's going on with that.

One feature of tHe legacy system is that radio voice circuits and teletype to the area offices shared the same microwave channel, and teletypes would be forced to pause while voice was taking place. I wonder if this situation involves this mix being mistakenly spilled into the VHF land mobile freqs?

Sounds like it sure could be. I don't know but since last night its stopped and back to normal. I guess it was just a temp thing.

Another thing is the beeps on DGIF 2. A couple of times all they could do was get beeps when transmitting. Radio Maint. came out and fixed but now you always get beeps with every transmission. Anyone know what that is or why it is? Heard on multiple radios and SDR. Its not a "Busy tone" type thing like LASO or anything either.

Ctcss 167.9, not rf

I don't know how I missed this before but....

Boris (and anyone else confused by his post), 167.9 is NOT on RF frequency; it's the subaudible tone used on 158.985 to open the squelch.
