I've been using Pro96Com with GRE's PSR600 for over a year and just received a BCD396XT three weeks ago and started using Pro96Com with it.

What I find ackward is that I have to lower the port setting to 9600 bps on the PC, on the BCD396XT and on the software underwise I loose connection within 5 minutes after started to decode ...

I've never changed anything on the PSR600, it's always at 115000 bps...

Any thoughts on that anyone ?

Are you use a USB device? I am running a BCT15X @ 115k, but I use a USB serial port adaptor made by FTDI. The FTDI chip is the same one used in the Radio Shack 20-047 cable. Some USB devices are not very good with intensive use that is used with digital transmission and decoding. I use a
US232R-100 cable and works flawlessly with Windows XP through Win7 32/64 bit, MAC OS X and Linux.
It really is a great product and it has removed all my Serial to USB problems with all my radios and modems.

More Info ...

On the scanner, I have a full 5 bar signal and the tower is less than 5 miles from my listening post, signal is not a issue here.

I've used 2 different Uniden USB-1 cable on 2 different PC on different comport on each and even tried the serial cable without more success ...

So I'm left with a problem that could be in the configuration of the software, configuration of the scanner or something's wrong with the scanner itself ?

Uploading programming to the scanner seems fine.

Anyone have a better config or success than that ?

Any idea anyone ?

Thanks

Hi

I have the same problems with my 396XT and Pro96com. I tried all bauds settings down to 38400 to make it works. So far 38400 works fine for me but nothing higher.

But with freescan, proscan, etc I set the bauds rate to 115200 and all works fine.

I didn`t try my 996xt yet.

I have no idea why this would be the case, as it works fine for hours on end with the PSR-500/600 at 115200. I don't know if the data coming out of the radio is still clean or has somehow changed. What does the raw dump screen look like when it stops?

Hi MIke,

You're right, I can leave my PSR600 running for hours or days without a glitch, but with the 396XT ... it's painful just to keep it running for 20 minutes ...

Thanks for looking into it and keeping us up to date on your findings.

Just happened

Started decoding 2:58 pm, stopped 3:19 and raw dump screen went blank at that moment.

At 3:32 it started again to decode by itself but NO RAW DUMP activities ...???

Prior to going empty at 3:19, it started to show odd things and longer strings of code than normal and among these it showed the following ones :

The question is then, is that what the scanner is putting out, or is there something else going on. I'm not sure how to figure that out at this point.

Hate to bring up a year + old thread...But...

I just got a 396XT a little over a week ago. No joy using the Uniden USB-1 cable. Tried multiple connect rates. Under scanner control heading, it shows the 396, but using COM 3. The 396 is connected to COM 5 and I can't change the setting.Nothing. No problems with any of my RS/GRE radios. Been using this program since my Pro-96 scanner in '03. Any ideas Mike?
TIA,
Larry

Mine works great, no problems at all. I normally connect at 57600, but switched to 115200 to see how that works, and no problems. Connected using USB-1.

Larry, are you able to connect to any other programs via the USB cable?

Indeed. I use FreeScan on the same comport. It runs the scanner control there without a problem. Even upgraded to version 1.9.6. Sees my 197 great. No joy on the 396XT.

I know this may sound elementary but when you are in PRO96COM and click on Edit>Decode Information> and select RESCAN, Are you able to click on the drop down box or is it light gray?

Nope. Can click on the drop down box. It is set for the correct com port. Just does not see the scanner. When I use the scanner control for FreeScan. Not a problem. Logging works, etc.. I guess that it will be FreeScan for the 396 and Pro96com for the GRE/RS's. No big deal. Just wondered why.
Thanks,
Larry

Did you turn on the option in the scanner to send the CC data to the serial port?

No, I didn't. New scanner, learning as I go:) I knew it had to be something simple again:D Thanks, Mike.
Larry

To add a little something:
I would go with just "ON" and not "Extended" for the CC output Larry.
At least I have found best results that way.
