Has anyone noticed on Radio Shack's web site that the Whistler WS1040 Digital Handheld Scanner is nearly identicle to the Pro 106?? Check out the comparison! But the Whistler WS1040 Digital Handheld Scanner is at a pricier 599 bucks, compared to the the Pro 106 which sold for $369-$400. Yet I cannot pull up a description of the Whistler on their website. Sounds like it is the EXACT same product to me selling for an extra 250 bucks!

Exactly. If you can wait, once the dust settles I suspect it will eventually be back to Pro-106 prices around the first holiday sale.

Yes, there was a thread about that a while ago:

Whistler will also manufacture those same scanners re-branded with the Radio Shack name. Check this post from last year:

http://forums.radioreference.com/co...o-shack-scanner-product-line.html#post2043001

New RS PRO-652 = old RS PRO-197 = Whistler WS-1065
New RS PRO-651 = old RS PRO-106 = Whistler WS-1040
New RS PRO-650 = old RS PRO-405 = Whistler WS-1025
New RS PRO-649 = old RS PRO-404 = Whistler WS-1010

The Whistler specs are here (click the links under the scanners):

At this point I wouldn't even bother buying a Phase I scanner brand-new. If you're just getting into digital scanning like I did a few weeks ago just pick up a decent second hand Phase I scanner to tide you over until later this year when Whistler releases its Phase II scanners. Then sit back and WAIT. Watch the early adopter reviews. See if these new scanners are as loaded with bugs and crappy designs as the new Unidens are. At that point, you (and I too) have to decide between the lesser of two evils. One has to come out ahead, and even if Uniden is only marginally better than Whistler at that point then that's the only choice we'll have.

I have a PRO 106. Several months ago I noticed you could no longer buy one on their web site. I emailed them about this and their only answer was "we do not know when they will be back in stock." This was during the same period when GRE closed down. What still amazes me is that the Shack still sells these old, 200 or 300 channel scanners, most RS employees know nothing about them, and customers are putting down large chunks of money to "hear the cops in action." Then they get home, and sometime later it sinks in: "What, no cops ?!!"

Whistler's digital mobile, as stated above, looks just like the 106. Again, I do not understand why they will sell analog scanners in the future. (All their scanners say "Coming Soon.")

Is there really a need for them? FWIW.

I doubt it. The GRE designs they are based on lack the necessary hardware to demodulate TDMA.

I need a new keytop from my PRO-106.
Does anyone know a part number for the new model number parts?

GRE TDMA

As GRE was going out of business they added P25 Phase 2 to the PSR 800. So you don't really need to doubt it, you can test it. They added P25 Phase 2 and X2 TDMA.

Since the OP was in reference to the whistler WS1040 the Pro-106/PSR500 clone, there is no reason to think TDMA will be included in the WS140.

I already know that. I was talking about the WS-1040 which cannot be upgraded to P25 Phase II. The same applies to the PSR-500/PSR-600/Pro-106/Pro-107 and WS-1065.
