Hello everybody. I want to throw something out. We complain about the choppy reception were getting with the Phase 2 systems. I was wondering what anybodys opinion would be about these pre-amps I see. One in particular the Jim M75 pre-amp. Yes it is pricey but would that solve any choppy reception problems we have with certain Phase 2 systems? I'ml just trying to find some answers. Or is this just wishful thinking.

I used that same pre-amp in my car years ago.

It worked well. Mostly because you can 'tame' it down with the gain control.
I still have four of them here that I use from time to time.

However, if you were to use it in RF rich environments, you'll probably have a lot of intermod, desense, and overload.

Most any pre-amp on a handheld can be 'iffy'.

Often the choppy reception on Phase II systems is because of distortion due to too strong signals from multiple towers in a simulcast system. A preamp (which boosts signal strength) would only make the problems worse since the root cause of the choppiness is because of too much signal reaching the scanner.
