I have a trx-2 updated with latest firmware. Local detention center has NXDN with frequencies listed but no talkgroups in the database. Windsor Southwest Detention Centre Trunking System, Windsor, Ontario - Scanner Frequencies I have setup with a wildcard but when it hits I only get a dial tone sound. I have also tried importing as a conventional frequency with a RAN of any, but get the same results. Is the dial tone sound what you would get if they are using encryption?

I purchased and have been Using the trx-1 for a couple of days now. I have programmed and monitored an NXDN (D) trunked system successfully. This receiver has also successfully decoded a DMR single channel and a DMR trunked. You must either use a wildcard talk group or a known talk group. The nxdn seems to need the specific talk group, I haven't figured out an allcall for that. To learn how to program it, I put in all the talk channels of the system in an analog scanner to tell when there is talk on it. Then try the settings on the TRX-1.

The NXDN range confirmed is in city limits so far. Analog receivers detect the NXDN signal 15 miles out. I have had it locked down to the trunked system, and it's not missing transmissions this way. The control channel beacons approximately each minute, this is showing an N in upper left and a squelch break. I had to put in the NXDN system, it wasn't in the database import, but was on the RR database.
I also have tracked the P25 phase1 trunked LSM system. I note about the same 'signal chop' than with other p25 scanners.
If you are not getting a local system there is something programmed wrong or it is too weak.
In the P25 system if you put in all the talk channels it will decode those even when it won't decode the control channel so it is good to do this while locking out the control channel (for fringe coverage).
It is picking up analog edacs at moderate to weak signal levels, correctly from imported database.

I don't think the instruction booklet explains how to program the radio very well.
You have scanlists. The only way to put anything in or out of that is from programming menu. When you put in a trunked or conventional channel you assign it to a scanlist. And, with a trunked system, the only way to get that into a scanlist is to put a talk group in and assign it to a scan list.

Also NXDN is not showing up in the big database so refer to RR and put it in yourself.
It may be there with no frequencies and no talk groups. But all the info is in the web based RR database.
The DMR trunked seems to be in there as the DMR radios have been out for awhile. This is really cutting edge.
I like the programming software capability to update firmware DSP and database directly or via proxy.
I also like that this is included without extra charge, just download the software install and update the radio.
My radio was outdated according to the 0 software so it needed an update right out of the box (especially to get NXDN)
When the radio is off it acts as a USB disk drive. Loading the software first will install the driver needed.
When the radio is on, it charges.
If the battery is low and you disconnect the USB you can crash it, I had to reset it by pulling the batteries.
Be careful to have it off when messing with USB connections. I tried pulling usb when the battery is up and had no trouble.
No harm done, the memory card did not corrupt.

Why get one? My ski areas all use DMR.
The tow company with the county contract here is NXDN shared. A major hospitol is NXDN.
All the casino's I've been to are NXDN.
A local motorola dealer system is now hybrid analog/TRBO.
The largest employer is using DMR.
Several power companies are DMR or analog trunked.
A nearby county is dropping Edacs for P25.
DMR handheld radio prices are dropping.

Encrypted channels get a 'busy tone'

I've monitored this system with DSD+ and all talkgroups are encrypted.
