When editing an article, you might see some odd coding that's been added to the article, and often this involves the use of templates.

Why do we use them? There are many reasons - for example there are times, when a function or text must be repeated across several articles or categories to give them uniformity as well as making it easy to maintain. Sometimes we use templates to standardize the data on the page, so that it's consistent regardless of the type of data (this is true in trunked systems) or to expand on the functionality of the wiki, because the current database doesn't support that function (as is the case displaying TRBO data, or warning about a trunked system type that can't be trunked or monitored).

There is a special page in the wiki to list all the templates - problem is, some are dead and there isn't much in the way of documentation on how to use them

The problem of identifying active templates has been addressed by creating a formatted index of the templates we currently use, and you can find it here...

Templates-List - The RadioReference Wiki

These pages give you the name of the template as well as a brief description - clicking on the template name will bring you to a display of what the template looks like. In some cases, going to the bottom of the template will bring you to a link that leads to an article that describes it in some detail, along with its purpose, the variables you need to use and even coding examples.

If you are thinking of writing or editing an article, please consider using templates where appropriate. This is strongly recommended if you are writing about a trunked system, including MOTOTRBO types.

Note that we also now have a template for defining MOTOTRBO conventional frequencies.

With the TRBO data, eventually when the database has fully implemented cataloging these types, using the templates will help the admins input the data in a formatted manner, instead of having to constantly cut / paste and guess where data should go.
