It's been nearly 2 years since I did this, and the scanner market has undergone a radical change. GRE and RS have basically exited the market, to be replaced by Whistler. There has been a slew of new scanners, along with various firmware based updates to allow us to hear modes not available back then ( DMR MOTOTRBO and ProVoice, with NXDN in the mix too), so if you are new to the hobby and are a bit overwhelmed with it all...

It's completely understandable

This article is for you - the newcomers who got new radios and are now wondering how the heck to use them. (And for the sake of full disclosure, I'm very jealous). Before we begin, anything that's blue - like the terms above - are links to various places in our wiki.

Let's start with the Uniden folks, because while we don't have new scanners, we have a lot of new modes and updates. You can begin here...

You'll notice that each of the articles I will present here has a chart at the top that describes to which scanners they pertain. Notice that in this case, we have separate FAQs for the Home Patrol families, altho at least some of the concepts presented in all 3 sets of articles are in some ways similar.

Now we enter the realm of confusion - this article was created when GRE and RS were still players in the game, so we have charts that cross reference each model number between GRE, the Old RS model numbers, the New RS model numbers (used before they pulled the plug) and their Whistler equivalents where they exist.

It should be stressed that these scanners can't get Phase 2, nor any of the newer modes that the next set of scanners can...;

GRE/RS PC Object Oriented FAQ - The RadioReference Wiki

Many, although not all, of these scanners are the ones that folks are using for DMR/MOTOTRBO and some NXDN decoding, along with the many Phase 2 systems that are coming out.

But that is the very tip of the iceberg. This category links all of the scanner FAQs we have stored in our wiki...

Take your time and don't try to digest this all at once. Be sure to ask your questions in the proper forums. We have forums for each of these manufacturers with lots of folks to help you along.

Enjoy and stay warm.
