Encryption of NYPD has been long overdue. Maybe NYPD will keep CW-3 clear for all the other law enforcement agencies continued use but I'd just as soon as NYPD encrypt that frequency too and any other law enforcement agency that wishes to continue operating on it should help fund the upgrade. Also all these other smaller police departments like MTA-SIR and peace officer and special patrolman type of public safety departments should purchase their own portables instead of NYPD giving them one from the house. The auxies should have a separate frequency encrypted or not and stop tying up the division frequencies with their noise too. No more free rides.

Long overdue. Accountability for the officers (The radio ID is their individual TAX ID # they get in the academy) and no more clowns calling in fake 13’s and calls.

My fellow NYCers will like to hear this.

John Miller said in a press conference today (in regards to encryption) "This is a 3-5 year transition, so nothing's happening today, nothing's happening next year, this is a lot of radios. It's something we're looking it, it's nothing that's happening right away. There have been other cities that have gone encrypted, they have made arrangements with the news media that have made sense. If we ever get to the point where we're going to that level, I'm sure the discussion will take place."

This would be a total bummer for me if this happens. I am 65 miles from Manhattan as the crow flies here in Ct. and have been listening to NYPD and FDNY since I was about 12 years old (about 50 years). I have a seperate dedicated Whistler WS-1088 just for monitoring the CW channels as well as a lot of precincts and EMS and FDNY. I know they don't care about me missing them if they went to E, but I would miss it for sure. To tell you the truth, I haven't heard any of the "problems" in a while now. I hope they reconsider. I have worked for a radio shop here and know what it costs even a small town to switch to a new system. I can't even imagine what it would cost the city of NY to make the switch!

Heard the same thing that the transition will be 3-5 years. This is definitely a domino effect as they’re using Nassau County and Port Authority as an example. I frequently visit Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan a lot and have only seen Brooklyn with the new radios and a few in Manhattan. The roll out I assume will be lengthy and slow (30,000+ cops) Plus P25 will definitely be testy in these parts so lots of testing will probably be done.

I couldn't believe it when the first report was that it was happening in 2020. Could be that sod or the citywides go E first in 2020.

Just as I predicted 3 months ago :)

If they are already buying radios ready for encryption then they have been testing the system for a while now just as rumors have confirmed before. The when part doesn’t really matter at this point. The discussion how entire department won’t be able to go fully encrypted because of P25 limitation and propagation issues aren’t accurate then.

Sad to hear this is eventually coming. I’m in western Suffolk County , about 20 miles east of the Nassau / Queens line. I’ve been listening to the NYPD for over 45 years and would hate to see it end.

Ahh, a lot more to listen to in the tri state area that’s in the clear

What.....and for how long?

The "E word" is being bantered about quite a bit, especially in cities.

It's something whose time has come, and "the press'" concerns are irrelevant.

Maybe Amateur Radio will have a big comeback....

Here and there
quick question when the nypd ganna be
fully encrypted what date?

As said in posted link video, 3 to 5 years.

With that you can expect some stuff to a switch sooner then the others and eventually in long run they'll strap down completely.

Keep in mind they been already rolling out newer equipment so.

Amazing how they specifically quote and identify streaming apps with safety of officers and integrity of Investigations. Nassau County is already been encrypted but it sounds like Suffolk county is going to stay in the clear?
