I was listening to the Hartford Fire Dept. Simulcast frequency (154.3100) today and I heard some weird tones go out. I should mention that I just mounted my 20-176 in the attic and wired it all up... Anyway, turns out the tones were from Berkshire County in MA. It was perfectly clear too. Obviously its not a big deal to Hartford if they're simulcast channel gets stepped on, but I would imagine that if I can pick up Berkshire from South Windsor, then Berkshire can probably pick up Hartford SIM on their dispatch channel. Wouldn't that interference be a problem? Even if the towns all had tones in their pagers, once they dispatch the channel is open. Maybe I am missing something.

PLs and DPLs make a difference. Also, Just because you can hear Berkshire County from Hartford does not mean someone in BC will hear Hartford. I am approximalte 90 minutes NE of Hartford and barely if ever pick up the simulcast so it may not be a huge problem and likely would be little to no problem on minitor pagers (very low wattage).

The PL's would keep Berkshire Cty from hearing Hartford most of the time. It would not keep them from interfering but the distance should take care of most of it.
The Hartford crosspatch is one direction so Hartford would never have a problem from Berkshire Cty.
Hartford FD uses 167.9 and Berkshire County uses 107.2

All the time I have been up in the hills, I never heard Hartford past Pittsfield. Even up at Mt Greylock I don't think I have heard them...and you can hear everyone from Greylock.

However, I can get TN (barely) around Chester.

I can get Hartford from my Jeep in Pittsfield when I drop the PL...But when in Otis on a fire call, Hartford will wipe out Berkshire County when we attempt to call them from the apparatus. We usually wait till Hartford drops then call...When I dispatched for Berkshire County, We use ta drop the PL on one of the south county transceivers & listen to Hartford (& Everett near Boston) on those dull late-night shifts...
BTW, the closest Berkshire County transmitter to Hartford is located on a hilltop near I-90 in Blandford Mass..
