Hey,

i am looking for a 2 way scanner. Meaning, i wish i could use my scanner as a regular scanner AND use it to speak to people with regular walkie-talkies (mostley 450 to 500Mhz)

I would like to knwo the best ones out there, dosent matter is there old or new, and would like a small list of good ones i should buy. And if it dosent exist, well in that case, i am willing to mod one if the is a mod out for that...

Thanks

LOL you can't do that..
You could buy a 2-way radio and use it as a scanner...

They're pretty expensive, limited and programming isn't very simple. (when compared to scanners)
Also who are you wanting to talk to?

If it's PS then you can get into a lot of trouble for that.

What your looking for is a 2way radio with scanning capabilities. Their are several out there and like they stated above you need to be licensed to use it or operate under an agencies license. Ive had several thru the years, a Regency, Maxon and a Motorola to name a few. Most you need a key and the right software or sequence to program. Hoser147

Or get a HAM license and a radio with extended receive like a VX-7 or FT-60 and talk and listen to a whole new set of friends.

The closest you could come is an amateur hand held dual or tri band two way radio with extended receive and scan capabilities. The only problem is that they cannot be used to legally transmit outside the ham bands. The Yaesu VX-7R is an example of such a radio.

i think it would just be awesome if they made one of those, even if they only operated on the grms/ frs channels, it would still be cool.

Why?

Or as George Carlin said over 35 years ago:

"If you nail two things together that have never been nailed together before . . . some shmuck will buy it from you."

Yea, I looked for that guy this year and others like him but I didn't spot one. I had hoped he would have been there so I could have stood in its presence if for only a very short while.

I heard someone dragged one around the Dayton hamfest the last 2 years and maybe 4 people at best even knew what it was.

Not $5000, more like $9000. I got a pretty close price quote a while back and it was ugly.

I thought it was bizarre that the civilian "clear" version didn't even include P-25 capability. For that price they could have borrowed a bit of code from the Thales25.

well not quite true you guys. as long as all you monitor is UHF then you could buy any professional radio in the UHF band and program in the ch's you want to scan and just turn off the TX then program in the FRS ch's and turn on the TX and keep the power at .5w or 2 w for the GRMS feq's. a used UHF radio isnt to expensive but you have to factor in programming cables and the program to enter the ch's. i have my VHF portable set up this way. i use it as a scanner and portable for work.

I really hate to bring this up AGAIN, but Part 90 commercial radios are NOT type accepted for FRS.

Well my FT-60 will Rx 108-520MHz and 700-999MHz and will Tx 137-174 and 420-470, not that I would use it to Tx out of band.
