Is the factory AM/FM/CD/Cass radio a dual DIN radio? In other words, can one take that radio out and put in BOTH the 996 and an aftermarket AM/FM/CD?

Yes, and no! You will have to get a dual DIN bracket,.
This is what worked for me.

One thing that is critical. The 996T bezel is not removeable like many DIN radios. I had to trim the lower part of the bezel because the AM/FM/CD had a face plate that was hinged and needed room
