27.545 Numbers Station ????

27.545.5 AM carrier with morse code letter and number groups.....1850z to sign off at exactly 1900z
S-7 here in coastal NC with no other major signals on the band at the time...i was using a 20m sloper dipole, NOT a 27Mhz antenna......your strength will vary


I was tuning the entire SW spectrum yesterday and found a S-7 AM signal sending morse code on 27.545.5.....fast morse around 30/35 wpm....first it sounded like text...then letter groups....followed by number groups.....the break in between each section was preceeded by a series of X's and 'de JIM' or JIO....such as' X X X X X de JIM' or 'X X X X X de JIO'..........that was also sent at sign off at exactly 1900:00z.....

It was a solid signal but didn't sound local....but there were no other signals on 27 Mhz at the time except for some weak SS QSO's.......not a general band opening or anything....

Curious if anyone else has run into this ?????

just tuned back there at 1545z the next day and there it is again !!

called a friend 30 miles away to the east and he had NO COPY whatsoever....

sounded like mixed groups/text and ended with "de JIPQ" at 1551z

now, I am only about 20 miles from USMC Camp Lejeune.....hummmmmmmm.....

today i am hearing FLA Freebanders strong on 27.345 S-9 AM at same time.....

weird......maybe it IS a local cubano sleeper cell........

Two people male/female (caucasian north americans) on 27.546 AM reading very VERY slowly in english ( like the old VOA Special English) what sounded like prepared sentences, like in a code, about 'being in support of the brotherhood'....'and don't volunteer for dangerous missions'....'you have children at home let someone else take risks'.....'i will do my part for the cause'......WEIRD just GOT WEIRDER !!!

I tried to see if I could copy in Richmond, tonight, but I didn't catch anything. All I got was a 10-meter beacon. Just curious though...that message you translated...do you by chance have one of those 'sect' camps out near you? Maybe them practicing or something. There's a few of those 'sect' campgrounds scattered around the rural parts of Virginia.

My guess is it's guys screwing around, trying to sound like terrorists or something. Or they very well could be actual drug runners. But they wouldn't bother trying to speak English... And presumably, they wouldn't be stupid enough to be blabbing away while they can be DF'd down. Either way, they don't sound very bright.

the last time yesterday i heard the two voice stations was 4:30pm local EDT.......again in exaggerated slow monotone english.....

Google shows LOKI as a Norse God.....so i'm guessing LOKI is a gamer avatar hero and these are video gamers role playing during a bored summer........

BUT the am carrier morse numbers station is another matter entirely.....i heard it as late as 10:30pm local EDT.wit hthe same S-3/5 signal strength as 10 AM !! all day and night messages...same strength all the time....same ID's....about one per hour....more frequent during daytime....starts with text goes into letter groups then number groups......fast morse....

both settled on 27.546 AM today........

also hearing a weak digital signal occasionally like ALE starting up.....the three short beeps and then the long BURRRPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP.......same as you hear around all teh utility bands....but it is a different station than the CW....teh CW was running one time when the digital came on in mid broadcast.....different stations,strengths.....etc

heard a few short Freeband CB'ers twice in the day but not for long......

whatever this stuff is, it's one active and interesting freq !!!! seemed to settle on 27.546 AM today.......

the fact that i'm getting the numbers group station the same strength at 10AM and 10PM on 27 Mhz suggests to me something close to me.......did not hear the voice stations after dark.....

the cw station is the real interest here......format and mode does NOT suggest tactical military near me (i'm close to USMC Camp Lejeune)..........

QTH here is on the ocean....with lots of commercial fishing and ports......and we have a long history of drug running in this area.....and Blackbeard too !

Of course there was that Ham operator, back in the 1990s, who got into big trouble sending phony distress signals on 20-meters. Said he was going down at sea, but he was in his shack in Fairfax County. In this case there isn't any connection between "Loki" and "Chahitto", which are names from 2 totally different cultures.

still about one per hour today....during many hours the AM carrier morse station will send just a coded text message about 2 mins long without letter groups or numbers groups....these messages always end with the same callsigns and format "X X X X de JIPQ......R R R R JIPO de JIPQ....." in standard communication format.....only one side is ever heard....same S-5 strength.....fast computer generated morse, not key sent......

getting feel of possibly training exercise or radio comms training at Camp Lejeune possibly ???? possibly emulating enemy/insurgant comms for MarineCorps radio ops to practice intercepts ???? hummmmm....dunno......

FYI:

FCC records (including a FCC prosecution document from 1999) indicate that legally 27.545 Mhz is allocated to US GOVERNMENT radio stations only........

of course we know how well legal allocations work in this freq range.....this area above legal CB CH 40 is the Freebanders Upper or High Band......27.555 is the USB International Calling Frequency amongst Freebanders......

1730z voice stations back on in slow english......one talking about being too busy for comms....brother mean't to call you sooner but too many plans...brother you know i am working for the cause....i never thought we'd face so many losses for the cause...other saying morale staying high against the invaders despite their great losses.....i will dedicate myself to Loki and strike where it hurts them the most....during this holy week time must be taken to honor Loki.....we will meet up tomorrow.but not for long as my wife is distraught....blessings brother....blessings brother......

Could it be a beacon? I know this is in the spectrum used by Freebanders (Freeband 25-30 Mhz users). Just a thought. I may dial this one up over the weekend.

Reminds me of a knucklehead in the Cleveland area a few years ago. Guy was XMitting destress calls from his boat parked in his drive way. A Coast Guard crew working Lake Erie nailed him. Guy did a year in a federal slammer...........

this def could be OPFOR comms for exercise practice......

we are in fact having a huge exercise this week (the holy week?) and being invaded (the invaders?) by BRITISH troops and BRITISH landing craft and offshore warships....joint air and sea landings were yesterday, same time as above message about losses to invaders......hadn't put the two together before....but could be possible....that they get a taste of crude commo conditions like an insurgant force might be forced to use....crude but effective if it's all you have.....

and i still think the mcw code transmissions could be ongoing intercept training for radio operators too.........

HOWEVER the mcw morse numbers/letters/text station remains a mystery and open to discusion if anyone else can copy it.......do any numbers/utility dx'ers recognize the pattern ? i do not. coded text followed by letter groups (5) followed by number groups (5) and always an " X X X de...." breaking between the three segments......and the end callsigns are always JIP(x) as in JIPE ;JIPL;JIPM;JIPO;
etc.....ends with an example : X X X JIPE de JIPL " the 3 segment broadcasts are fast morse around 35 wpm ....but the text only messages are slower 20wpm.....text only messages are less frequent....

OK they just broke the pattern as i type....NEW callsigns.....".KDFY de KDFK ".same three segment format tho.....just new callsigns at the start and end of transmission ! Oh, and the morse was really slow, around 15 wpm this last transmission...armchair copy.
